Speaking by phone with A. Karis, the Lithuanian leader expressed the expectation of productive cooperation in the future and invited him to visit Lithuania with a bilateral visit, the Presidency announced.
“I hope that Lithuania and Estonia will continue to cooperate successfully to ensure the security of the Baltic region, seeking prosperity and stability both in our region and around the world,” said G. Nausėda.
He also invited the Estonian president-elect to attend the meeting of the three Baltic leaders in Lithuania in the fall.
On Tuesday, the Estonian parliament elected the former director of the National Museum, A. Karis, 63, as the country’s new president.
He was nominated by 59 deputies from the Reforma and Centro parties.
Born on March 26, 1958, A. Karis studied molecular genetics and developmental biology and served as rector of the Estonian University of Natural Sciences from 2003 to 2007, and from 2007 to 2012 he headed the University of Tartu. He has been Auditor General since 2013 and in 2017 he became Director of the National Museum.
