You only have 6 minutes to save a life – these golden rules are a must for everyone

In the “Recipe for Health” program, Militra teacher Viktorija Jefremovaitė said and visually showed what and how to do so that in 6 minutes each of us could save the life of a drowned person.

Hitting the back when a person is coughing, no way

Asphyxia is of two types: partial and total. The partial is experienced more frequently, in which case the person is able to speak and breathe and help himself, that is, he begins to cough. In a moment of total suffocation, a person can no longer speak or breathe.

When a person chokes on being home alone, there is a lot of panic. In this case, according to V. Jefremovaitė, it is necessary to immediately look for a steep angle and not skimp: fall on it with the abdomen so that the angle is between the navel and the diaphragm. Sometimes people perform a Heimlich maneuver on their own.

Too often, loved ones start hitting them on the back in some way to help a drowning person. This is strictly impossible.

“When there is partial asphyxia, the body removes the foreign body by coughing. What we can do is be close and encourage the person to cough and look at them ”, said the interlocutor to the program.

If a person suddenly stops coughing or is caught by the throat, then the foreign body has moved further and he can no longer speak or breathe.

“You should ask if he’s drowning. It may sound funny, but it helps a person to calm down a bit, because he understands that someone else knows what he has, ”said V. Jefremovaitė.

It is very important to know how to do the Heimlich method correctly

The next step, when the person is already completely drowned and can no longer breathe: 5 shots in space. However, they must be done accurately.

“We turn to the side, we put a hand under the armpit and we take the man by the jaw with the same hand. We lean the person forward. With the other hand we hit the palm of the hand up and down with force 5 times ”, said the interlocutor.

If the foreign body has not fallen off, the Heimlich method should be performed. V. Jefremovaitė explained how to do it.

We stand behind our backs, placing one leg between the legs of a jumping man. The hands should be inserted under the armpits. We find a point where we will click, between the navel and the ribs. We make a fist, bending the thumb of the same hand over it so that the bent thumbs form a right angle. We squeeze both hands and press not inwards, but outwards, as if we wanted to abruptly lift a person.

Press 5 times, if it didn’t help, hit it back into space, then press the chest again. This is repeated until the foreign body leaves the airway or until the person loses consciousness. If we lose consciousness, we begin to revive.

How to help a baby who chokes?

Babies up to 3 months old cannot breathe through their mouth, they only breathe through their nose. Also, the baby cannot show that he is drowning, so it is important to recognize this disaster as soon as possible. A drowning baby begins to flush, is restless, tries to cough, may run into saliva.

The speaker emphasizes: in no case should the baby be shaken by lowering the head. Baby’s bones are still very fragile, shaking them can break them, shake the brain, and damage the cervical vertebrae and muscles. So it really can’t be done.

If the baby does not respond, help should be provided. Like adults, infants initially received 5 blows to the back. It is necessary to sit down, put the child’s abdomen on the arm, hold the head, rub the back with the other hand, but not as strongly as in an adult.

If that doesn’t help, we use the Heimlich method, but we do it a little differently than for an adult. We perform chest presses, they must be done with two fingers between the nipples. Click 5 times.

We repeat until the child begins to cry, it means that he is no longer drowsy. If the baby stops breathing, resuscitation should be started as soon as possible.
