Sixteen-year-old Lithuanian team coached by Remigijus Bardauskas in the final of the FIBA Challenger Group A tournament 51:57 (2:15, 21:14, 6:13, 22:15) got teammates from France and took second place.
Despite losing in the final, the Lithuanian team achieved the most important goal: they won the right to play in 2022. U-17 Basketball World Championship.
The Lithuanians started the game without finding their way to the opponents’ basket. Only after playing nine minutes, Justas Stonkus scored the first points of the selection. These were the only Lithuanian points in the first 10 minutes (2:15).
The much more successful second half, which was won at 21:14, allowed the Lithuanian team to narrow the gap and keep up with the competitors by around ten points.
With nearly three minutes to go in regulation time, the French led 53:42. Still, precise long shots by Ernestas Matulevičius and Deividas Žukauskas allowed intrigue to return to the game (51:55). In the remaining 34 seconds, the Lithuanians could not see a fruitful attack, and the French victory was established by the placement of Alexandre Sarro – 57:51.
D.Žukauskas, who scored 9 points, played more productively in the Lithuanian ranks, Petras Padegimas (5 rebounds) and Kristupas Kepežinskas (5 res.) They added 8 points each, and Vytautas Žygas added 6 points.

This year’s FIBA Challenger tournament became the unofficial European Championship and replaced the official priorities of the Old Continent that were not organized due to the coronavirus. The U16 men’s tournament took place in four European cities with 31 teams competing.
Lithuanians competed in Skopje, North Macedonia, as well as Sofia (Bulgaria), Novi Sad (Serbia) and Pristina (Kosovo).
