The decision to run Plungė Hospital shocked some doctors and law enforcement officials alike. After all, R. Mažeika, who starts working this week, and Antanas Martusevičius, the long-term head of the Plungė medical institution, were charged with bribery in the same pre-trial investigation.

R.Mažeika’s connection with the mayor of Plungė, Audrius Klišonis, was not lost. After all, Šiauliai, who has long managed the Šiauliai Territorial Health Insurance Fund (ŠTLK), has signed hundreds of thousands of contracts with Inesa, a trading company that provides medical services in Plungė and the district. Its owner is A.Klišonis.

Presented as a savior

A few weeks ago, the mayor of the Plungė district introduced R. Mažeikas to local politicians and last week to the local media.

The new chief was entrusted with the mission of rescuing the institution. It was emphasized that the Ministry of Health (SAM) is initiating the reform of ambulance, primary health care and hospital treatment.

Therefore, before the pandemic is over, Plungė Hospital needs an experienced and competent manager to handle the situation.

R.Mažeika herself said that when she was invited to work, she raised two conditions: this must be approved by both the district council and the hospital staff.

The mayor thanked the minister

The mayor of Plungė district explained that former leader A.Martusevičius was removed from office after the corruption scandal.

After that, this doctor’s health deteriorated and he had to undergo surgery.

Doctors warned that returning to a stressful job would put her life at risk.

According to A. Klišonis, the eliminated himself said that he did not intend to return to work.

“There are no easy decisions when it comes to appointing or firing managers, however, thanks to the minister that Plungė Hospital will have a good manager,” said A. Klišonis.

Do suspicions weigh?

By the way, A.Klišonis assured that the states of A.Martusevičius and R.Mažeika in the case of corruption are not the same.

This was a surprise, as in the corruption investigation, bribery allegations were brought against both for a non-transparent purchase of medical equipment, and R. Mažeika was quickly removed from the group of experts advising the president.

The Plungė district mayor repeated the version that the accusations made to the managers carried a different weight than the Lietuvos Rytas journalist.

According to the politician, the law enforcement authorities did not request the dismissal of the RŠL director and, due to A.Martusevičius, he received such a request.

A.Klišonis stated that R.Mažeika will be the interim manager, and the competition for this position has yet to be announced, because due to the reorganization initiated by SAM, the future of the hospital itself is unclear.

He has signed several contracts

A. Klišonis, who has a degree in pharmacy, said that he knew R. Mažeikas, who had been invited to run the hospital, for a long time, as the latter was the head of ŠTLK.

It is true that the politician pointed out that the call was influenced by the recommendations received, the general successful work of hospitals during the pandemic.

The mayor did not want to name the value of the contract he signed with his company every year until 2018. R.Mažeika, who headed ŠTLK: “I am the owner, not the coach.”

Inesa, a business company owned by the Mayor of Plungė, has been providing medical services to Plungė residents and district residents for many years. The company has a family clinic in Plungė and a network of outpatient clinics in the district.

It is publicly disclosed that Inesa has 76 employees and annual turnover in 2016-2020. amounted to up to 2 million euros.
