“On August 10, the Mayor of Plungė District Municipality, Audrius Klišonis, held a press conference at Plungė Hospital, which was also attended by Mindaugas Kaunas, Director of the Municipal Administration, Oresta Gerulskienė, Municipality Doctor, and Giedrius Ramanauskas, Acting Deputy Director of the Hospital.
A. Klišonis introduced to the media the future head of the Plungė District Municipal Hospital – Remigijus Mažeikas, who will take over as temporary director of this institution from 17 August.
During the press conference, Mayor A. Klišonis recalled that Plungė hospital has not had a permanent manager for some time: the director of the Antanas Martusevičius hospital has been removed from his post due to the investigation initiated. When his health deteriorated during A. Martusevičius’s operation, the doctors treating him warned that homework, which involves a lot of stress, can be fatal. The mayor said that he had received a message from A. Martusevičius that he no longer planned to return to office.
Mayor A. Klišonis said that he had spoken with representatives of the hospital administration about how to solve the situation, especially since the Ministry of Health is initiating the reform of the health care system (ambulance, primary health care, hospital treatment) . Before a COVID-19 pandemic ends, Plungė Hospital needs an experienced and competent manager to handle the situation.
As the Republican Šiauliai Hospital was recently a support hospital for the Plungė District Municipality, eyes turned to it: it was decided to invite Remigijus Mažeikas, the former director of this hospital, to work at the Plungė Hospital. On July 27, the Municipality hosted a meeting with the Plungė District City Council members and a business conversation. After discussion, there was no objection to R. Mažeika taking over as director of the Plungė District Municipal Hospital.
R. Mažeika confirmed that during the negotiations on the new post he established two conditions: he will work if his candidacy is approved by the Municipal Council and the Plungė Hospital staff.
Upon assuming the role of director, R. Mažeika said that he would endeavor to keep Plungė Hospital as an active treatment institution, to preserve all existing hospital treatment departments. To improve the services provided to patients in the hospital, it is necessary to update the diagnostic possibilities and attract a wider range of medical specialists.
Currently, G. Ramanauskas, who temporarily manages the Plungė Hospital, noted that R. Mažeika’s competence as a manager was assessed during the quarantine: the managers of the Plungė, Mažeikiai and Telšiai hospitals constantly felt his attention, consulting on the treatment of the coronavirus , especially in severe cases.
M. Kaunas, director of the municipal administration, recalled that the first coronavirus outbreak in Plungė district originated in the Stonaičiai pension; then R. Mažeika sent doctors from the Šiauliai hospital to the pension to train local staff on how to treat and care. for people with disabilities.
R. Mažeika has served as director of the Tauragė Territorial Health Insurance Fund, then the Šiauliai Territorial Health Insurance Fund, and since 2018, director of the Šiauliai Republican Hospital. He was removed from the post of director of this hospital by order of the Minister of Health A. Dulkis.
“There are no easy decisions when it comes to appointing or firing managers, however, thanks to the Minister that Plungė Hospital will have a good manager,” Mayor A. Klišonis noted when introducing R. Mažeikas.
The portal “Delfi” recalls that A. Dulkys decided to remove R. Mažeikas from the post of the Republican Hospital Šiauliai after a young doctor who worked in this institution spoke about the harassment experienced by the employees.
After the tragedy, both President Gitanas Nausėda and Health Minister A. Dulkys visited the hospital. After the meetings, they said they had heard from staff about the harassment they were experiencing.
