Bringing a viral and safe to a new life
In the summers, Evaldas and his girlfriend Sandra used to spend time on a farm inherited from their grandparents in the Šilalė district. They were the ones who took care of the constant maintenance of the territory, and at the same time they took a break from the bustle of Vilnius and cooked meat or vegetables.
“When we arrived, there was not always good weather. Once we sat on a bench, it was raining and we thought we had to buy an umbrella or a gazebo. There are old buildings on the territory of the hacienda, so we remember the viral house of my grandmother, who used to produce animal feed. That is how the idea of remodeling it a bit and installing a gazebo where you can spend time even in bad weather was born, “recalls E. Jakštas.

When the idea to renew the old viral came up, Evaldas also recalled the safe situation of the grandfather on the farm: this is from working hours. The couple considered turning it into a fireplace.
“Initially, we thought about building a fireplace ourselves or buying a new one; we were always looking for ideas. Finally, when I saw the safe, I thought that something could be done with it. I still tried to send the safe to some workshops, asked if it was I could turn into a fireplace, but everyone answered that they don’t do that job because it’s not worth making new ones. So we came up with the idea of making everything ourselves, “says E.Jakštas.
Since the virus had not been fully utilized for many years, the couple had to go to great lengths to resuscitate it to a new life. The building was bigger, it had a porch, so Evaldas and Sandra dismantled everything first.
“We didn’t know how to do it, so we learned from YouTube, googlinome, how to remove old paint, – smiles E.Jakštas. – We had tools, we scrubbed, we concreted the floor, we painted. Sure, we did it unprofessionally, but when it came out, we handled it that way. The professionals could probably get on with the job, but the most important thing is that now we are loved and good. “
The couple tried to distribute all the work: Evaldas did more tasks that required physical strength and Sandra scrubbed boards, painted, distributed tools or held a ladder.
“We even bought a cement mixer because we didn’t know if it was worth hiring someone during the quarantine to help us,” says E. Jakštas.

As Evaldas says, the goal of the two was to install everything at the lowest possible cost. Therefore, the couple tried to use the same materials and only when it was necessary to buy new.
“For example, we use the same tree that we cut. But I had to buy cement, paint, scrub discs, screws, explains E.Jakštas. – Later, we thought that it would probably be worth buying everything new, because we work a lot. But it was a way of spending free time. “
Cleaning the building was the most challenging
Today, the new gazebo is already fully equipped and allows the couple to have fun even in bad weather. According to Evaldas and Sandra, such a renovation cost them around a thousand euros: installing a fireplace cost around 100, and the rest went to the cabin.
“The main initiator of the change was my friend, because he just wanted to buy a big umbrella,” laughs E. Jakštas. – And now we have hammocks, Sandra reads, works with a computer. We have designed everything to be comfortable for us. “

According to Evaldas, almost everything was done the way he wanted, but the flat caused me a lot of headaches, because for a while I had to think about how to do it better.
“We were going to lay the parquet boards that we had, but we changed our mind because the floor was not poured evenly. Then we went, we bought special tables and lined them up, – says E.Jakštas. “We also received comments that the roof needs to be replaced, but we intentionally left it that way, at first it was very attentive, green.”

Evaldas laughs that the mistakes made by the two are not yet visible, but there is still room for improvement: over time, they realize what can be fixed or installed.
“For example, we recently decided that additional shelves were needed,” says E. Jakštas. – There were many first times to renovate the building, but now it’s fun for them. Friends and family come, we have a place to sit ”.

Recalling the entire work process, Evaldas points out that most of the challenges were demanded from the beginning, because then everything had to be cleaned up.
“There were a lot of unnecessary items, because the viral had become our warehouse,” says E.Jakštas. – And then we divide the work, prepare in advance a plan of what we would do. One weekend we were concreting the floor, the next we were scrubbing. We did everything in stages. “
Evaldas and Sandra began renovating the building during the first quarantine and, as they say, the repairs took roughly two seasons.
“The house had been turned into an office, the working hours were gone, so at least on the weekends they wanted to escape and change the environment. We had real estate in Šilalė, so we went there; it was the only municipality we could reach. We got tired of walking around Vilnius and we felt free there, we had a large territory ”, says E.Jakštas.

Therefore, the renewal of the viral became a kind of quarantine entertainment for the couple: while some were spending time at home, playing sports or doing other activities, Evaldas and Sandra did repair work.
“It just came to our knowledge then flour – We turned on the music, we laughed – E.Jakštas smiles. – Of course, there were more difficult moments in which it was necessary, for example, to specify. But everything went very well. “
For those who are considering following the path of Evaldas and Sandra, in addition to undertaking the renovation of old objects or buildings, the man advises first to consider that it will take a long time.
“There will also be a lot of work to do,” warns E. Jakštas. “However, the projects that they have implemented themselves are much better than those carried out by others.”
