More sanctions are being prepared for unvaccinated workers, will they even be able to forgive?

The company, which produces mattresses and beds in the Vilnius district, has more than 300 employees, only half of them have been vaccinated. The head of the company is still considering how to deal with those who refuse to vaccinate, but supports the measures proposed by the government.

There is a lot of contact work in the company, employees side by side, there is no opportunity to work remotely. Therefore, the manager could remove unvaccinated employees from work.

“If an employee does not agree to be vaccinated or examined, the employer should offer to work remotely, if possible. If this is not possible, then the employer would have the right to withdraw and not pay wages,” said Vytautas Šilinskas, deputy minister of Social Security and Labor, to LNK.

The obligation to take the test is now imposed on medical, educational and social workers who do not wish to be vaccinated. Vaccination has also been seen to accelerate with the entry into force of mandatory tests.

The companies welcome the Government’s proposal to expand the list of activities that require vaccination or testing. But they fear that there are no workers left.

“This regulation leaves the responsibility to the employer to decide whether or not to remove the employee. And a situation can arise where we already know that employees say they will simply quit their jobs,” said Andrius Romanovskis, president of the Lithuanian Business Confederation.

Industry representatives do not support the removal of workers if they do not get vaccinated. They offer mandatory tests for paid employees.

And the opinions of the common people were divided.

“It just came to our attention then. If you are sitting somewhere in a separate office, you may not need to get vaccinated. But if you communicate with people, especially in the food industry, I think there must be some protection, ”explained one from Šiauliai.

Another argued that people should have freedom of choice, not be forced.

“It just came to our attention then. It is not a forced vaccination,” another woman explained.

The government also promises amendments to the law providing for sickness benefits. In other words, a person who has not been vaccinated but has a coronavirus would not receive sickness benefit.

“We pay taxes, we work. Can we have prisoners and will we have to pay? That’s nonsense,” said one woman.

“The sickness benefit is everyone’s, I don’t agree with that,” said another Šiauliai resident.

And the drafters of the amendments have their arguments.

“If a person is injured while intoxicated, then they are considered to have been at higher risk, have acted recklessly. And in that case, they are paid and not paid today. This could include an additional uninsured event if the person also behaves recklessly and has not been vaccinated. Of course, there would still be exceptions if a person cannot be vaccinated, “said the deputy minister.

President Gitan Nausėda’s advisor on LRT Radio emphasizes that the government should seek motivational rather than coercive measures.

Proposals for sanctions against evil workers must be submitted to the government by August 10. And then they will travel to the Seimas.
