“Zoos are, first and foremost, a refuge for the protection of protected species and a place of education for the townspeople. The Lithuanian Zoo will celebrate its 85th anniversary in a completely different way. After starting the work, we reviewed the project and together with the experts, the garden staff resolved the conflict and the contest was successfully completed.
I want the contractors to see this project as a monument to themselves, so all the residents of Kaunas and the Lithuanian children will appreciate it, ”said Environment Minister Simonas Gentvilas on signing the contract.
New larger buildings and aviaries for animals will be renovated or built, educational spaces, laboratories, etc. will be installed. After reconstruction, this zoo should become a modern center for the conservation of biological diversity, for carrying out scientific activities, educating the public, cooperating with scientific and educational institutions and other European and world zoos.
Even in the interwar period, in 1938. – The infrastructure of the zoo established in Kaunas will fundamentally change: brown bears and wolves, lynxes, otters, foxes, various species of monkeys, cheetahs, bison, camels, kangaroos, corsacks, small cats, pheasants, etc. They will settle in the new aviaries.
The African savannah will amaze not only giraffes, zebras, but also a new rhino exhibition. Mixed exhibition aviaries will also be built: kangaroos will coexist with black swans and ostrich emus, brown bears with gray wolves, etc.
The old one, from 1954, will be renovated. built, lion building maintaining authenticity. More than 2,000 people will join. kv. meter exotarium – a building for heat-loving animals with an educational center.
It will be equipped with open deserts, exhibits of jungle animals, meerkats, lions, various reptiles, amphibians, insects, and more. animal exhibitions, aquariums from various habitats around the world, laboratories, staff and other educational venues and spaces.
A new space “Mažylių Zoo” is being created with rabbits, poultry, goats, etc. for children. The upper and lower part of the zoo area will be connected by a new elevator bridge. The infrastructure is designed in such a way that it would be convenient for people with disabilities to access and view the exhibits.
After the completion of construction, preparatory work will be carried out: the territory will be planted, aviaries and terrariums will be installed, huge aquariums will be filled, new species will be brought to new houses and they will be housed in them.
During the construction period, some garden residents will have to temporarily move to a “hotel” at that time: other temporary zoos or aviaries that have already been built. The zoo will be closed to visitors, but educational activities will continue uninterrupted.
The renovation of the zoo began in 2017, but most of the work is planned after the contract is signed and will last until 2023. end of June.
