These qualities become highly valued when a person works in conjunction with technology, combining mind and creativity with the efficiency that technology provides.
According to Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Vilnius Tech), Faculty of Electronics, Associate Professor dr. Dainius Udris, some of the principles used in the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be even more important in the Fifth Revolution.
“Industry 4.0 pays special attention to process automation, digitization and artificial intelligence. In an industry based on these technologies, the goal was to increase the efficiency and flexibility of production. The fifth industrial revolution will pay even more attention to this, looking for ways for people and technology to work together effectively to achieve higher productivity, efficiency, speed and quality. At the same time, the goal will be to ensure environmental benefits, reduce pollution and pay more attention to renewable energy solutions, ”he says.
Automated solutions vs. human handiwork
Advances in automation are increasingly being applied in industries where most manufacturing processes are quickly being taken over by robots, resulting in less and less human labor. However, according to the Vilnius Tech associate professor, this does not mean that people will need less as employees, on the contrary.
“With the start of active process automation, many simpler employees felt the risk of losing their jobs, as machines could do their jobs much more quickly, efficiently and continuously. Still, the theorists of fourth and fifth industrial revolutions see this as an advantage: it will give people the opportunity to acquire new skills, learn, improve, participate in lifelong learning practices acquiring new skills to work with technology ”, says D. Udris.

When it comes to the fifth industrial revolution, which will put people at the center and the benefits for them, a crucial aspect is the flexibility that automation and a safer work environment provide. According to Eurostat, the construction, transport and warehousing and manufacturing sectors have the highest incidence of accidents because processes that could easily be automated are still largely man-made. Automation makes it possible to emphasize another advantage: the flexibility of work organization. “The global Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted which sectors and companies have been able to adapt more quickly and easily. Unsurprisingly, the most automated and robotic companies were able to continue working without hindrance, while others had to suspend or reduce the ability to protect workers. New technologies such as robotic equipment, remotely controlled plants, automated data processing, risk monitoring and risk management can create a much more flexible and safe work environment, less dependent on adverse external factors “Says D. Udris. There is no shortage of examples in Lithuania where a new level of productivity, quality and efficiency has been achieved through process automation.
Automation is one of the professions of the future
Although the Industry 5.0 vision still exists only in documents from the European Commission and other institutions, universities are already preparing study programs and updating the curriculum to prepare future professionals for future innovation and challenges.
In the Fifth Industrial Revolution, automation will be crucial as one of the technology areas. “Automation already covers almost all the most important areas of human life and, as a specialty, it is applied in almost all industries. Already now, Vilnius Tech’s trained automation specialists are studying to create hardware and software for the management of various technological devices and processes, identify and eliminate faults, apply the latest computer equipment for automatic control, remote control and regulation of devices and processes. technological, solving automobile team management tasks using modern tools and methods ”, says the associate professor.
Higher education institutions are already preparing to update their teaching base
There is a need for specialized modern equipment for research and training in order to further improve the training of specialists in accordance with the concepts of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, innovation and the development of digitization and automation of all processes . The university plans to upgrade the training base in cooperation with business partners Teltonika IoT Group by acquiring Fanuc 6-axis industrial manipulator with integrated image recognition system, gripper, aluminum frame, controller and operation simulation research program. and Roboguide computer programming.
This new laboratory equipment will undoubtedly guarantee the generation and dissemination of new knowledge. The development and research of solutions for global digitization and the integration of production and other company processes in a unified system will be carried out, as well as the development and application of digital twins for the optimization of process management. The use of the equipment will open opportunities for research on the reliability, renewal and reuse of electronic devices and embedded control systems, the search for integration solutions and the implementation of unified intelligent systems ”, says D. Udris.
The equipment is intended to be applied not only in the training of undergraduate and master’s students, but also by organizing professional development courses for employees of industrial companies, thus facilitating the installation and assimilation of new equipment.
Automation will continue to be crucial in the future. “Each successfully applied solution not only facilitates or completely renounces physical labor, but also provides the opportunity to create new quality products, save time, energy and raw materials, making the process itself flexible and safe.” , emphasizes Associate Professor D.
