In Druskininkai, migrant hangars are emerging from this day. This message may sound to some like an anti-social publicity for the resort, which is mainly famous for its orderly surroundings and other things that favor physical and mental health.
However, that vision can be had, at least for the moment, unless those who have little idea where those hangars will be and how much determination the officials who monitor migrants day and night must have to ensure the safety of the entire Lithuanian population. .
15 minutes On July 5, he visited the Druskininkai firewall of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS).
The headquarters of the border guards that protect the border with Belarus is located on the outskirts of the complex. There are simply no people living nearby. Druskininkai tourists may stumble across this dead end in the desert too, if not by accident. The area is fenced off, filmed, guarded by officers armed with dogs. And it is behind this fence, in the territory of the firewall, where the hangars promise the migrants.
The hangar installation process, at the request of the military, is not public.
How 15 minutes said Andrius Beloručkinas, the commander of the Druskininkai border guards, the process of installing temporary housing at the request of the military, in principle, is not public. But when the hangars are ready, the public is promised to display them. It is expected that it will only take a few days to install the army hangars, and until then the media will be able to capture them only from the “corner of the eye”, from a distance.
Firewall staff dropped out of their immigrant training class. There was simply no other option. It’s no secret that some arrivals are reluctant to follow order, sometimes with basic personal hygiene, which is why the rooms kept by staff are horrible. “Nothing, let’s get rid of that,” the officials agreed, and even smiled, saying that the situation here was good now. Not like the one at the weekend: people lay there, sitting and walking huddled like herring in a barrel.
It’s hard not to realize that most migrants, in our opinion, are unclean, but officials try not to underestimate it.
When the firewall visited 15 minutes, there were “only” 52 migrants inside. Some of them spent time outside, so there was no congestion or friction anywhere.
The number of arrests stopped by the guards on this firewall is already in the hundreds, but most foreigners are taken to other ready-made temporary accommodation as soon as the paperwork is completed.
One of them is in the town of Alytus, which is relatively close to Druskininkai. The migrants settle there within the city limits, but also in a place where there should be no fear of ensuring their own safety and that of all Alytus residents. It is true that the capital of Dzūkija warns that local resources are limited.
The Alytus Airport Administration facility on Lakūnų Street, which is now designated for migrant shelters, is the only place that meets this need. “It is human that the people around us are more sensitive to such a neighborhood. But in this case there is an entrance, an exit, in terms of security it is very important”, emphasized Romas Jankauskas, Head of the Department of Communication of the City Council of the city of Alytus.
We do not have other such adequate premises and our municipality could not accept more detainees.
According to him, the airfield administration building was abandoned for migrants and far enough away from all residential accommodation. “In any case, we do not have another suitable location and our municipality could not accept more detainees,” said R. Jankauskas.
If there is no suitable object in the city, perhaps you should look a little further, on the territory of the Alytus district municipality.
How 15 minutes said Alytus d. Dalia Paulauskaitė, the mayor’s adviser, was the subject of a meeting Monday morning, after which officials went to watch “live.”
“If the number of detained migrants increases, they will have to be temporarily housed somewhere. The representatives of the municipality only went to see the possible places, speak with the residents of the town,” said the mayor’s advisor, adding that at least today no specific location had been decided.
However, temporary housing is not a dream for newcomers. Both want and can express their needs; wishes are very simple. They need food and water. How 15 minutes mentioned the commander of the Druskininkai firebreak, one of the migrants said that he could no longer suffer a toothache. “He received medical attention, injecting painkillers,” said A. Beloručkin.

Visitors are reluctant to share their thoughts on what they promise to do in Lithuania if there is a basis for granting them political asylum. He says nothing or replies that he does not know. It is true that there are good exceptions.
One of the migrants enthusiastically paired up to be happy to take care of installation matters in our country, as the electrician is very knowledgeable. Another newcomer (from Africa) stated that he dreams of being admitted to some team as a professional footballer. If these ambitions are justified, perhaps you will ever have the opportunity to be evaluated by sports professionals. But the African’s ambitions are probably not empty words: the young man was surprised by the young man who saw the half-empty backpack he carried with him, and in it was a pair of football boots with real nails.
A young man from Africa surprised the officials who saw everything by showing what he had in a half-empty backpack.
By the way, as mentioned by the firebreak commander A. Beloručkin, despite the heat and the generally difficult current situation, a group of migrants approached the officials asking if the border guards could not find them somewhere near the stadium. The reason is simple: waiting for decisions about their future while playing soccer would be much more fun for them than sitting in vain. Lithuanian officials were unable to satisfy this initiative, simply because additional and much larger forces had to be provided to ensure security.
