Prayer: What I saw at the Seimas scared me.

“Today is the last day of the spring session. So, around the first half of the year in the Seimas. As far as politics is concerned, I was planning to put the issues of the EU and geopolitics on my agenda, topics I had been writing about for several years. We are hungry for information and ideas on these topics. I wanted to update them and show their importance to our daily lives.

However, what I saw scared me, ”wrote M. Maldeikis, who works in the Lithuanian Christian Democratic faction Unión Patria, on Facebook.

You are surprised that the main topic in our policy is no longer left / right value options.

“It doesn’t matter where a member of the Seimas sits in the plenary hall.

We are in the initial, and therefore less visible, stage of the revolution against the emerging free society.

This process is taking place both because of the internal zeitgeist of our country, and because of the growing need in society for tribal and populist policies. It is fueled by a sense of injustice lubricated by the Internet. This is a global trend, in which liberal democracy is under increasing pressure due to the end of the Bretton Woods system, on which the free world was based after World War II, “wrote M. Maldeikis.

He doesn’t want Lithuania to become another Hungary

The MEP agreed with those who say that we are forced to approve the European agenda earlier than the old Member States did.

“But the opposition I see to my country becoming a modern European state is becoming a threat.

It is not about one political force or another. The turning point runs through society as a whole, as well as political formations. As the market matured, it now lacks stronger leaders. And when there is a market, it is a matter of time before someone takes it, ”said M. Maldeikis.

He said that he would not want his country to become another Hungary where the commander would decide how I would live.

“I do not want to usurp the institutions of the country that work for the commander, not for the public. A captive press that would tell me what a party and its leader are. I don’t want any sexually frustrated politician to tell me what a family is, how to love a country, or that art is abusive …

It is not just a matter of political choice. This situation is very and very contrary to our national interests, otherwise I would say that people try to live in an illiberal democracy and get vaccinated against such a scenario ”, said M. Maldeikis.

According to him, such a system is, in principle, anti-Western.

“It just came to our attention then. We would also become another victim of the already shrinking global democratic field. And the security and economic growth of our country in the medium and long term can only be guaranteed in the western democratic space. Among non-democracies. , nobody is interested or needed by us, other dictatorships would digest us quickly. 1940 we had to teach us something “, wrote M. Maldeikis.

According to the parliamentarian, democracy within and around us is the guarantor of our security.

“It is incomprehensible how it is possible to seek its destruction and at the same time scream as if you were a patriot. I will do my best to maintain Lithuania as a liberal European democracy in politics,” wrote M. Maldeikis.
