For more than 40 years, when Pranas Urbelis is on duty on the official beaches of Kaunas, near the Kaunas lagoon and Lampėdžiai, no one has drowned there yet. However, now, according to this commander of the aforementioned beach rescuers, a tragedy can occur at any time due to the work of the dredger on Lake Lampėdis.
P. Urbelis, the head of Lagna, expressed such fears to the kauno.diena.lt portal at noon on Saturday at the rescue post located on the beach of the Kaunas lagoon. But it was thought to be on Lampėdžiai beach, thirteen kilometers away.
According to P. Urbel, after the mentioned works, the Lampėdžiai beach suffered maximum damage, because the dredgers, filling the gravel extracted from the depths, made dangerous wells. Not to mention, the grass will start to grow from the mud poured onto the shore in a couple of years. Now there are also about 200 death pits.
“We measure: you walk one meter – and a three meter pit, behind the meter – another and the same – similar. And so, in a stretch of about 300 meters, “said P. Urbelis. He said that when it was reported, the answer was that the work was not finished yet. When asked how long they would last, they said about a week. However In reality, they did not last a day, that is, from 50 meters, perhaps only 50 can be repaired, and in the rest, according to P. Urbel, it is practically impossible to swim.

“Whoever created those wells will have to answer,” the commander of the official Kaunas beach rescuers often assures. By noon on Saturday, some 400 people had already gathered at Lake Lampėdis. On the beach near the Kaunas lagoon, which, according to P. Urbel, is currently the safest in Kaunas, around 1 pm there were already about 500 people. This year, many have not yet gathered here, although the records of previous years, of course, have not yet been broken.
And according to the interlocutor, the Kaunas lagoon beach became the safest after the water decreased, here a sloping shore was made with a tractor to the water, the depth of which to the buoys, that is, about 25 meters from the shore, approximately 1.80 meters.

This year, since May 15, when rescuers began to stand guard on this beach, as in Lampėdžiai, until now only teenagers who overestimated their strength and swam behind the buoys have had to help return to the Bank. But it was not very complicated yet.
Rescuers on the Kaunas lagoon beach had to call a teenager and an ambulance this year. This one, who came here with his companions, cut his foot on the rocks on the shore. After bandaging this wound, which was about 10 cm deep, the blood continued to thicken, so it was decided to take out insurance and call a doctor.
In previous years, the biggest problem was during the day at the beach, where they gathered in groups and soon became unpredictable when exposed to alcohol and solar cocktails. This year there is still no such problem.
The entertainment of foreigners on the shores of the Kaunas lagoon, which was last year and last year, has not yet been renewed. Especially: Ukrainians, who, after drinking alcohol, are also very fond of swimming. However, this year P. Urbelis is already tense when four five teenagers arrive on the beach of the Kaunas lagoon. And usually this sixth feeling doesn’t fool you.

P. Urbelis states that most visitors to the Kaunas lagoon beach know him face-to-face. A woman, who came here almost daily for three years, suddenly fainted last year on the same hot day as this Saturday. And after an ambulance took her out, she doesn’t come here anymore.
Despite the warnings of the experts, and this Saturday around 1 pm that is, at the time when it is advisable to be at home, there were more people coming to the Kaunas lagoon beach than leaving.

One of the possible reasons is that the Kaunas lagoon water is blooming for about half a month this year, like all nature. But, Mr. Urbel is convinced that if it continues to be so hot, it will bloom very soon.
And so far, the biggest surprises await the Kaunas lagoon beach rescuers, who finish their shift on duty at 8 p.m., when they arrive at work in the morning, because it seems that nightly orgies start here after that. This is evidenced by the mountains of sunflower husks and mistletoe found in the morning. And traces of crows feasting, emptying the leftover pizza containers, scattered within a five-meter radius. Empty alcohol bottles and beer cans have already been collected by so-called sanitation workers, by the way, without trying to fix their residue trails.
