The coroner says Anna Gimeno Zimmermann and her six-year-old sister Olivia were killed by their father, Thomas, to “cause as much pain as possible” to their mother.
Olivia’s body was found at sea in a bag tied to an anchor on Thursday.

The disappearance of Anna and Olivia was reported on April 27, after T. Gimeno agreed to spend the afternoon with them. The man is also missing and the Spanish Civil Guard considers him dead.
A nine-page report from the examining magistrate was published on Saturday and the Spanish press reported the details. It describes what Gimeno, 37, is suspected of doing before and after the deaths of his daughters, according to a police investigation.

Thomas Gimeno and the girls’ mother, Beatriz Zimmermann, have known each other since adolescence, but separated during the pandemic last year.

The report says that he “sought to create uncertainty about the fate of his daughters by hiding their bodies in places where he believed they would never be found.”
“He did all of this after informing his ex-wife and relatives that he was leaving with Olivia and Anna and that no one would see them again,” the report says.
The following afternoon, his ship was found adrift at sea. Anna’s car seat was also found floating in the water.
Olivia’s body was found in the bag 44 days later, at a depth of 1,000 meters. The next bag next to it was empty.

On Sunday, the children’s mother sent an open letter to the public.
Beatriz Zimmermann wrote that it was “the most horrible act a man can do: kill his innocent children.”
“When I was told this message, my world fell apart, and no matter how difficult it is, now I can at least mourn its loss,” he said.
“My soul hurts that I couldn’t save their lives. I wish I had been there for that moment and held their hands so that we could die together … But it couldn’t be, because Thomas wanted me to suffer my whole life looking for them, ”my mother wrote.
Protests across the country
The sisters’ case shocked Spain, where there were numerous protests against gender violence.
On Friday, about a thousand people, mostly women and children, came out to protest in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A young woman was holding a sign that read “Stop killing us,” reported the Spanish newspaper El País.
