This year marks exactly 30 years since Iceland was the first in the world to recognize the independence of the restored Lithuania in 1991. This year, the special theme of the festival is the Cod War. This is an important part of Icelandic history, with the cod wars between the UK and Iceland in 1958-1975 over fishing rights.
And Iceland won them all. So this year, the entire Thank You Iceland program revolves around cod, wars, achievements and the ability of small nations to be powerful in defending their freedom and national interests. A great friend of Lithuania, probably the bravest politician of the last century, Jonas Baldvinas Hannibalsson, will tell us about the Cod War itself.
The diaries of the Lithuanian partisan Juozas Lukša-Daumantas were read by the well-known Lithuanian actor Mantas Stonkus and this will be a new breadth for Mantas.
The event was also attended by the then President of Lithuania, V. Lansbergis, and the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Jonas Baldvin Hannibalsson, who discussed freedom, courage, the world and cod.
