In 1998, Nelson joined the Dallas Club and became an assistant to the general manager of his father, Don.

It was Donnie who set up the meeting with Dirka Nowitzki before the 1998 NBA Rookie Trade and had a huge impact on the shout-night German trade for the Mavericks.

When Father Nelson resigned as CEO in 2005, Donnie took his place and worked there until now.

While Nelson was general manager, the Mavericks played twice in the NBA Finals and in 2011 they became NBA champions.

Nelson also worked for 14 years at the Coaches Headquarters for the Lithuanian men’s basketball team, from 1990 to 2004.
