Residents of the coast are in awe of the new train route – there are no toilets or lifeguards there.

As one of the interlocutors of the article told the news portal tv3.lt, the closest rescuers hired by the Karkle municipality are towards Giruliai and about 4 kilometers away, on the other side of Nemirseta, the rescuers are on duty only for about 8 kilometers. However, the project initiators emphasize the issue of toilets rather than lifeguards as a more important issue.

Project – “very strange”

An entry appeared on the social network account of the Žilvitis children’s camp in Karklė the same day after the announcement of the new transport project. In it, the camp is surprised by such an initiative.

“The project of LTG Link and the Klaipėda District Tourist Information Center to launch the Vilnius-Karklė transport connection to Karklė is very strange, when at that time there were practically no public toilets and even lifeguards in Karklė.

There is no longer even to talk in the locker room. Some kind of reckless, spontaneous action. All the dunes and the camp will be devastated, ”laments the camp’s social network account.

However, Darius Nicius, director of the Seaside Regional Park, assures residents that the new connection is not intended to attract flows to Karklė, it simply aims to give people the opportunity to relax in a different coastal environment.

“First of all, there is no additional traffic here. Karklė is a stretch of coast, a rural area and there is no possibility of installing large parking lots, and probably the problem is that there are many cars all over the coast during the summer.

Therefore, such a suggestion is that the stretch of coast can also be reached by train. Of course, there is no train in Karklė, but there is the opportunity to change by bus or other ways to come and relax, ”says D. Nicius.

According to him, Karklė is not a tourist center, so the municipality is not obliged to create the corresponding infrastructure.

“As for rescuers, yes, there are no rescuers at the moment. Just because Karklė beaches do not have the status of beaches. Rescuers show up when a beach is installed, which we see, say, in Klaipeda and Palanga. But this is already a purely political and financial question ”, explains D. Micius.

However, when asked if the flow of tourists in Karklría would intensify in the summer or if lifeguards would be needed, the director of the Seaside Regional Park says he sees the least problem here.

“I would see the least problem for rescuers, we should still look at the statistics here, whether in this section, where there are no rescuers, if the number of drownings is higher compared to Palanga or elsewhere, but here the experts have to assess .

One of the biggest problems is, I would say, the lack of public toilets. Today we do not have public toilets in Karklė, there are only those temporary biotrenals, but they no longer meet today’s needs, ”says D. Micius.

Do you need bathrooms more than lifeguards?

Daiva Buivydienė, director of the Klaipėda District Tourism Center, says she agrees that lifeguards may be needed in Karklė during the season, but does not yet know if they will be there.

“Obviously, they are definitely needed there. Because the swimming place at Karklė beach is a bit tricky, because there are cliffs and boulders. Therefore, on the seashore, in the water, there are rocks. And the fences Advertisements there advertise that bathing should be done with extreme caution as there are invisible stones under the water.

We have raised the issue in the municipality that the problem should be addressed not only with information, but also with rescuers in this area. (…) there are still discussions about it and I think rescuers will come there, but I can’t guarantee it ”, says D. Buivydienė.

At the time, Audronė Balnionienė, the Klaipėda district deputy mayor, added that the accent of the Vilnius-Karklė connection is not bathroom, but health.

“Emphasis is placed on the health trails and the entire Karkl costa coast where you can hike and recover. In this case, no emphasis was placed on the beach area, and more efforts were made to take advantage of the unique nature.

(…) Karklė beaches are wild beaches and do not have beach status, therefore there is no obligation to establish a rescue service there by law. There is also no possibility of legalizing the beach, because the beach must meet special requirements for that ”, says A. Balnionienė.

The district deputy mayor adds that there are currently both benches and changing rooms on Karklė beach, warning that this section is not supervised by the rescue service. A. Balnionienė adds that a stationary toilet may appear in the near future, but it is not known whether rescuers will be on duty at the settlement during the season.
