On Monday night, with the accuracy of the minutes, at 4:18 p.m., a helicopter from the Lithuanian Air Force landed on the Vilnius Santariškės traffic ring road, with which the donor’s heart was brought. When organizing the heart transplant process, a helicopter is always used to transport this organ to another city or country, since the cardiac ischemia time is extremely short, so every minute is extremely important. The recipient has been waiting for the heart for almost 3 years, so the appearance of an organ suitable for transplantation will radically change the life of this patient, which is equivalent to a miracle, because the donation gives life expectancy. And all this thanks to the donor’s relatives, who made an extremely noble decision during the most difficult hour of the loss: to donate organs to seriously ill people.
On this occasion, it is especially significant that the donor’s liver was also suitable for transplantation, since it will be transplanted into a patient in a particularly difficult condition, for whom it will give invaluable life expectancy. To rescue this recipient, the SAM National Transplant Office also announced a search in other states, but it was the liver of an effective donor registered on Sunday that was suitable to save the life of a young man who could no longer wait for a suitable donor. “Such cases, when a particularly urgent recipient receives a suitable donor organ, reveal the invaluable value and miracle of organ donation,” says Artūras Bagotyrius, Director of the SAM National Transplant Office. – People waiting for a transplant do not need organs tomorrow, or in a month. Today it saves lives. Therefore, each effective donor is extremely important, each positive decision of the loved ones has a unique value. “
During 2021. In Lithuania there have already been 3 heart transplants, 9 liver, 34 kidney and 26 cornea. Two kidney transplants were performed from a living donor. The SAM National Transplant Office states that today more than 400 people in Lithuania are waiting for an organ donor to lead a healthier and more productive life.
