Following the retirement of a young doctor last weekend, SAM initiated a research study.
Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys announced that he has formed a working group that will explain the situation at the Šiauliai Republican Hospital.
The Lithuanian Medical Movement demanded the removal of the hospital managers during the investigation, but the ministry says it sees no reason to do so.
The director of the Remigijus Mažeika hospital stated that he would not resign voluntarily.
I can only look
In order for the change initiation group formed by SAM to carry out the most objective investigation possible, LMS asked to include Linas Skučienė, a physician from the Šiauliai Republican Hospital, and Jurgita Sejonienė, a member of Seimas.
However, this request was not heard either.
According to the Ministry, representatives of the Medical Movement will only be able to monitor the activities of the working group.
“SAM cooperates with all the associations and unions that have expressed their desire to participate in the process. Our goal is an objective assessment of the situation at Šiauliai Hospital, so that organizations representing the medical community will have the conditions to participate as observers. ” 15 minutes Julijanas Gališanskis, a specialist with the Ministry’s Press Service, wrote in the comment posted on
“Convenient” practice
According to the president of LMS, A. Gerliakienė, both the hospital and the SAM in this case resort to the usual “convenient” practice: denial.
“It is a perfectly common practice because, from what I have had to observe in government hospitals, the only correct and one hundred percent option for them is to deny the problem. Whatever the level and scale you have. In my opinion, hospital directors and department heads behave as they are used to. I think this behavior is supported by SAM, it is very convenient for everyone ”, said the president of LMS.
According to A.Gerliakienė, such tactics can have very sad consequences.
“The ministry justifies the need for a thorough investigation, to analyze everything, yes, I understand. But people need to work today and feel bad today. Today they are experiencing more harassment. With such behavior, the hospital runs the risk of having a complete chain of suicides or losing staff all the time, ”he warned.
When such behavior occurs, the hospital runs the risk of having a full chain of suicides or permanently losing staff.
Continue to report bullying
A.Gerliakienė revealed that despite the actions of SAM and the hospital management, which were taken after the doctor’s suicide, the hospital employees continue to complain about the mob.
“I received three complaints yesterday and had already received complaints from employees before. They express their fears, they express a request for help. For some reason, I believe that both the hospital authorities and SAM do not want to see the situation realistically,” lamented the president by LMS.
He said he doubted that SAM could really objectively assess the situation at the hospital, but expressed the expectation that the prosecution, which was going to be attended by the relatives of the deceased doctor, would be able to do so.
“There is still a prosecutor’s office, which I really know will be contacted by relatives. It is possible to wrap up this situation, cover it up and hide it, but there will still be a legal investigation. Depending on how much and what kind of material is accumulated, I think the attempt to dust the situation may end sadly, “said A. Gerliakienė.
There have been complaints before
In August last year, a group of employees of the Republican Šiauliai Hospital submitted a written request to the State Labor Inspectorate (VDI).
The complaint alleges that the employees are suffering psychological violence from the director of the Cardiovascular Center.

During the inspection carried out by the SLI, based on the explanations of the employees and the responses to the questionnaires, it was established that an adequate, safe and healthy psychosocial environment cannot be provided for them at work.
The hospital then requested a postponement of the problem for another half year, arguing that the annual procurement plan for 2021 in the first and second quarters provided for the purchase of a psychosocial risk assessment service for all hospital staff.

Decide on your own
However, when the inspection agreed to postpone the deadline, the hospital changed its mind.
The institution’s procurement plan does not foresee such a service, as it was decided that this evaluation could be performed by specialists working at the Šiauliai Republican Hospital.
In early May, before the disaster, all hospital staff received a special questionnaire, which they completed before May 17.
How 15 minutes Sonata Tenytė, a public relations specialist at the Šiauliai Republican Hospital, reported that the commission formed by the medical institution in July will present the findings and proposals of the investigation.
A. Gerliakienė stated that he doubted the objectivity of the internal investigation, because the problems that had become obsolete in the hospital had not been solved in any way so far.
“How can you make objective assessments if there are conflict situations that have lasted two years and have not been attended by any service within the hospital that has had to respond?
I wonder where those psychologists were at the time the conflicts occurred. They couldn’t help meeting them. Consequently, I don’t believe in their objective research even now, “said A. Gerliakienė.
Recommend professionals from the country.
Paulius Skruibis, a psychologist at the Vilnius University (VU) Faculty of Philosophy, commenting on the situation at Šiauliai Hospital, noted that it would be better to use specialists from abroad for an objective assessment.

“It seems to me that an independent and impartial look would be a better option. What I am hearing is not in this situation, but in others, it can be difficult for doctors to seek help from professionals who work in the same hospital.
Not because it is not safe, the information will be leaked, I would like to believe in the professionalism of the professionals. However, to later have to work with the same colleagues, we have to go through the corridors ”, explained the psychologist.
P. Skruibis emphasized that doctors working at Šiauliai Hospital have a higher risk of suffering emotional crises if help is not provided in time.
“The psychiatrists and psychologists who work there are also members of that team, they are also shocked. And if there is resistance in the team, it is even more difficult to provide help. It is better to help from the outside ”, recommended the suicidologist.
It is better that help comes from outside.
The psychologist emphasized that it is wrong to think that there may be a reason for suicide: bullying. This is a complex phenomenon.
According to the psychologist, peers who have withdrawn from life are currently very shocked, which makes them more vulnerable.
“If the problems that are not solved include despair, no matter what they do, there is no solution, add despair, especially for people who are on the brink.
But there is another side that worries me too. There is such a phenomenon in the science of suicide: the Werther effect. It talks about the fact that when a suicide story is escalating a lot in a public space, other people in a similar situation identify with it and get the scenario that experiencing mobbing is suicidal, but it is not. In general, it is never the case that there may be a motive for suicide ”, explained the specialist.
