Recent school rankings show a jump in private gyms: public schools are starting to lag behind

Ratings Magazine Chief Editor Gintaras Sarafinas and journalist Jonė Kučinskaitė presented the data received at a press conference held on Wednesday. They indicated that they evaluated a total of 368 gyms whose 2020 graduates took state maturity exams (VBE).

They highlighted that both the secondary analysis of international studies and the national ranking of gyms based on the VBE results show a tendency for municipal and public schools to begin to lag behind in the competitive fight with private schools.

“On the one hand, this is good, on the other hand, it will further increase social exclusion (between parents who can educate their children in the best private schools and parents who can only choose the closest school, depending on where they live ). And this competition is especially significant in Kaunas and Klaipeda, ”the rating agencies said.

According to them, so far only municipal schools in Vilnius are more difficult to move from senior positions held for many years.

“Let’s say if we look at the top ten selected schools, we see that there are even 3 private schools here.”

This year, the ranking compilers noted the big changes that occurred in Kaunas, because the gymnasium of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences exploded here, displacing the two Jesuit gyms:

The authors of the rating magazine noted that the top ten so-called unscreened schools were also killed by private schools:

I noticed an interesting trend

According to the compilers of the ratings, it is interesting that among the top 100 schools in the country, even a quarter are gymnasiums from municipalities with a low socioeconomic background.

“So regardless of the context in question, a quarter of gyms achieve good academic results,” they said, giving examples of these types of schools.

Good results were obtained by: Lazdijai d. Seirijų A. Žmuidzinavičius Gymnasium, Kupiškis L. Stuoka – Gucevičius Gymnasium, Pasvalys P. Vileišis Gymnasium, President J. Žemaitis Gymnasium (Raseiniai), Zarasai Ąžuolas Gymnasium, Panevėžys district. Velžio Gymnasium, Siauliai district. Kuršėnai L. Ivinskis Gymnasium, Biržai “Saul Gimnasio” Gymnasium, Vilkaviškis “Aušra” Gymnasium, Joniškis “Aušra” Gymnasium, Pakruojis “Atžalynas” Gymnasium, Kelmė District. Kražių Ž. Liauksminas Gymnasium, Jurbarkas A. Giedraitis-Giedrius Gymnasium, Raseiniai District. Viduklė S. Stanevičius Gymnasium, Anykščiai J. Biliūnas Gymnasium, Rokiškis district. Obeliai Gymnasium, Varėna Gymnasium “Ąžuolo”, Kelmė District. Tytuvėnai Gymnasium, Kalvarija Gymnasium, Šakiai “Žiburis” Gymnasium, Pakruojis District. Linkuva Gym, Alytus District. Daugų V. Mironas Gymnasium, Varėna district. Valkininkai Gymnasium, Skuodas P. Žadeikis Gymnasium ”.

Thus, for the second time in addition to the gym, the price of a student in each gym was presented in the local ranking, but this criterion was not evaluated.

“We only bring the price of a student’s education to the attention of the Readers of the Ratings, so that the parents of the students see for themselves if the school is having difficulty teaching students the academic subjects and ensuring a good microclimate due to low funding. or other reasons. “

The maintenance of a student is the most expensive (without evaluating specialized schools): Vilnius d. Buivydžiai T. Konvickis Gym – 8,501 euros, Neringa Gym – 7,999 euros, Vilnius district. Medininkai St. Kazimieras Gymnasium – 7,433 euros, Vilkaviškis district. Gražiškės Gymnasium – 7008 euros, Trakai district. Onuškis D. Malinauskas Gym – 6652 euros.

And the education of at least one student costs in the following schools: Kelmė J. Graičiūnas Gymnasium – 945 euros, Vilnius Gabija Gymnasium – 1358 euros, Vilnius Fabijoniškės Gymnasium – 1612 euros, Vilnius Oz Gymnasium – 1622 euros, Kaunas J. Jablonskis Gymnasium – 1789 euros.

Assessed elementary schools and progymnasiums

Rankings magazine also featured for the seventh time an assessment of the vast majority of the nation’s schools that have participated in national student achievement tests (formerly called standardized tests) over the past three years.

Based on the achievements of the last three years, the following are leaders:

1. Kaunas P. Mašiotas Elementary School

2. Kaunas m-kla – kindergarten “Šviesa”

3. Vilnius Kindergarten – class m “Singers”

And based on the achievements of eighth graders in the past three years:

1. Klaipėda Tauralaukis Progymnasium

2. Vilnius J. Basanavičius Progymnasium

3. Progymnasium continental of Vilnius

Basic schools were also evaluated

For the fifth time, an evaluation of basic schools was also presented, based on the results of the Basic Education Achievement Test (PUPP) considered in the tenths (last three years).

According to compilers, there are about 250 basic schools in Lithuania, but their size is different.

“So when we evaluate basic schools, we divide them according to the number of students.”

The strongest basic school in the 1-9 category (grade 10) is Krosna Main School in Lazdijai District.

The strongest basic school, where up to 23 students study, is the Šeštokai basic school in the Lazdijai district.

The strongest basic school, where more than 24 tenth graders study, is Plungė Old Town Basic School.

And among the main schools of national minorities, the strongest is the old school of Old Trakai A. Stelmachovskis.

We will feel the consequences of a long quarantine.

“The achievements and level of twelve-year-olds were reviewed in the university gyms, but it turned out that we would not be happy with the results of the high school graduation exams. This is not a problem, because in Lithuania problems do not go one by one, they often go in groups, “said G. Sarafinas at the press conference.

According to him, those problems are especially abundant in education, which is why he said that the consequences of the quarantine in education will have to “be absorbed for a long time.”

“Not only academic performance, but also well-being, psychological problems and social factors and teacher fatigue. Watching the same teenagers for half a year on the couch (…) is simply disastrous. Worst of all, we will be mumbling in the mud of education for a long time, there will be no blame. Although there will be a fight, a quarantine. “

According to Sarafin, it will be very easy for schools to argue with everything in the coming years as soon as some problems arise. According to him, exclusion will only increase between individual regions, which will be determined not only by decreased motivation, but also by other opportunities.

“Some parents have inexhaustible opportunities and hire a tutor for their children, so that they do not have major problems, but there are parents who cannot hire. Then it will only be more difficult for them and those differences, those gaps will grow, and it will take a year or two to catch up. It will take time and money to get out of the current confusion in education. “

According to G. Sarafinas, the starting positions of young people in various municipalities differ several times, and their perspectives and future depend on this.

“Last year, we clearly saw 5,000 young people fail the maturity test and their plans fell through. It does not matter how sad it is to report, (bet) but today some prestigious specialties become inaccessible to students from entire municipalities because they cannot compete with colleagues from good schools and advanced municipalities ”.

According to the rating agency, it is not the children who are guilty of this, but the environment in which they live, and the administrations of these municipalities ignore such signs. It started from the fact that the exact sciences in Lithuania are the least taught and are very different because of that in the Kelmė district. or municipality of Pagėgiai.

“The politicians and officials of these districts and regions see better that half of 2020. the graduates in their municipalities simply did not pass. This is very evident and those who have passed are very weak. (…) To be just a trend this year, definitely not. Other disciplines are poorly taught, but nothing is changed. “

In Ignalina, for example, he says, the numbers are staggering, with only 7.5 percent passing the math test in this municipality. graduated and did not pass two thirds.

The private school outbreak

“The outbreak of private schools became evident, the LSMU gym, which was in the fourth position among the elite gyms in the country, was very popular in the top ten of selective gyms. He also expelled the Jesuit Gymnasium, (…) Of the ten best schools not selected, up to half are private schools. (…) What does this phenomenon mean? On the one hand, it is good that parents can be sure that their investment will pay off, ”said J. Kučinskaitė.

According to her, in 2018, almost 5 million euros were allocated to the development of research in general education and the monitoring of evaluation.

“Of this amount, 4.2 million. Euro absorbed. It really is, that name may sound very complicated and educators probably understand what is behind it and parents less. (…) The so-called titles had to be created so that students eleventh and twelfth graders could self-assess their knowledge and predict their results during state maturity tests. “

According to J. Kučinskaitė, students are often seen signing up to take the state maturity test, but they don’t come to do it because they have been scared lately.

“If those qualifications worked, both students and teachers could predict quite accurately, (…) because we see how students’ grades do not correlate with maturity test results. Thus, the abilities of the students had to graduate in certain stages and all had to know what their knowledge and abilities were, as well as the qualification that they would possibly obtain during the exams ”.

The compiler assured that almost a quarter of a million has been spent in the creation of the rubrics, but no one has seen them until now and the money has been spent.
