With the entry into force of the new vehicle owners system, there will be no penalties until September

As previously reported, vehicle ownership change and registration are now two separate processes.

The buyer, who declares the acquisition of ownership of the vehicle, must first request it in the Registry, and then the seller must confirm the data provided by the buyer. By following both steps, the new owner receives an owner declaration code (SDK) with which he can now apply for vehicle registration.

The buyer and the seller must jointly declare the change of ownership within 5 business days, which can be done online or at Regitra offices. However, given the fact that the changes affect a large part of the population and that there are currently possible interruptions in the provision of services in the Regitra, it has been decided to apply a period of tolerance for deadlines.

If the buyer did not file the declaration or the seller confirms it within the prescribed 5 business days, they will be administratively responsible before September 1. will not apply. This also applies to vehicles imported from abroad, when the SDK must be obtained before entering the territory of Lithuania.

It is important to note that even with a tolerance period, both buyer and seller must fulfill their obligations as soon as the opportunity arises. Until the transfer of ownership is declared and the buyer does not have the SDK delivered, they will not be able to register the vehicle in their name.
