Birštonas Mayor Nijolė Dirginčienė says the municipality is ready to return students from the aforementioned classes as of May 10, but would not test them for COVID-19, because according to the mayor, this is still a recommendation.

“I think the tests are not mandatory. No, I think it really is not necessary. If someone wants to volunteer, the conditions are definitely created and they can do it, ”the head of the Birštonas municipality told LRT radio on Wednesday.

The mayor of the municipality of Marijampolė, Povilas Isoda, affirmed that there are “many unanswered questions”, especially regarding the tests, for which clearer decisions are expected by the Government and the Chief of Operations. It also says that the municipality will not be able to return the students from next Monday.

“If there are rapid antigen tests, the children will perform them themselves under the supervision of an employee; the question is which employees will be able to supervise, which is not answered today, how will confidentiality be ensured (…). As of Monday, more children will definitely not be able to return to schools in grades 5-8, ”the mayor said.

Eglė Andriuškienė, Deputy Director of Kaunas City Municipality Administration, stated that primary school children successfully returned to schools, ready for the return of graduates from Monday, but currently Kaunas Municipality enters in the black zone and laboratories are already facing disturbances due to increased test volumes.

“We would very much doubt that this can happen smoothly by allowing grades 5-8 to enter the schools,” he said.

The government will decide on the return of these students to contact education on Wednesday.

On the eve of the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Jurgita Šiugždinienė said that he would suggest that fifth to eighth grade students could go back to school starting Monday, and tenth and eleventh grade students a week later, starting Monday. May 10.

The Minister promises that returnees will be able to be screened using rapid antigen tests, which do not require laboratory tests, in addition to the bulk testing method currently in use.

Currently, part of the country’s primary students can go to schools and, as of Monday, graduates.
