All the breeders had bought birds from unauthorized dealers. According to the keepers themselves, the birds were bought in Maišiagala, Rudamina and Lentvaris last weekend. According to traders, the birds were bought in neighboring Poland without veterinary certificates confirming their health. When the newly acquired birds were brought to their farms, initially no changes in health were observed, but after four to five days, both the newly acquired and previously kept birds began to die suddenly, with bluish beards and rags before death. . The keepers contacted the Vilnius Department of the SFVS, whose veterinarians immediately went to each site suspected of avian infectious disease and selected samples from dead birds for testing for avian influenza.
We remind you that birds should only be obtained from licensed farms to prevent the spread of disease. The highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza virus is wreaking havoc on poultry farms in neighboring Poland, so it is likely that if the birds are illegally introduced into infected farms, the virus will spread to Lithuanian farms where they are kept for your own use.
The SFVS asks all poultry farmers who have bought chickens in the Maišiagala, Rudamina and Lentvaris areas this weekend, that is, from April 17 to 18, to immediately contact the SFVS toll-free number 8800 40403, indicating the address of the farm and its telephone number, for the clinical examination of the birds and, in the case of dead birds, inform the SFVS to select samples from the birds they keep for possible avian influenza. Similarly, any bird breeder who realizes that birds that are no longer fading, listless, or suddenly dying should immediately contact the SFVS to obtain a sample of avian influenza.
The SFVS will post information on the results of the investigation conducted on its website. The situation regarding possible illegal bird imports will also be clarified and administrative sanctions will be applied if the complaints are confirmed. In addition, depending on the situation, the SFVS will also carry out unscheduled inspections of bird trade places and organize border checks on birds entering Poland this weekend.
