“As for the specific measures that we will take, we are considering various measures. I do not intend to speak publicly about this at this time, but we have reported that if Mr. Navaln dies, there will be consequences,” he told CNN.

President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest opponent, jailed in February, went on a hunger strike on March 31, demanding proper treatment for back pain and numbness in his legs and arms.

Navalnas has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for an old case in which a politician is accused of embezzling money in a correctional colony in Pokrov, about 100 km east of Moscow.

Navaln doctors warned Saturday that he would have a heart attack “at any moment” as his health rapidly deteriorated.

EU ministers will discuss the situation in Navalno on Monday

With growing concern for the health of Alexei Navaln, a Kremlin critic who went on a hunger strike in Russia’s correctional colony, European Union (EU) foreign ministers will discuss his situation at Monday’s meeting.

“The EU foreign ministers will also discuss the situation in Navaln at tomorrow’s foreign affairs council in Brussels,” Heiko Maas, the head of German diplomacy, told Bild on Sunday.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stated that the Community was closely monitoring the Navaln situation and warned of possible new sanctions on Russia.

“We have already taken action,” he said, referring to the EU sanctions. “The sanctions package is already significant, but there may be others.”

Mr. Maas also called on the Russian authorities to provide Mr. Navalns with adequate medical care as a matter of urgency.

“We demand that Alexei Navaln receive adequate treatment and the opportunity to see doctors he trusts,” the minister told the newspaper. “You should have the right to immediate medical treatment.”
