Lithuania gets on a vaccination train and bites Latvia asks Denmark to share stored AstraZeneca vaccine. Denmark became the first country in the European Union to decide not to use AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria vaccine entirely due to the risk of blood clots. So far, Denmark is said to have several hundred thousand remains of the AstraZeneca vaccine, prompting a series of attacks.

“I realize there are some quantities in stock and a few more quantities that should show up on the road. I really don’t know what Denmark has to share and how it will decide to share. Yesterday we submitted our application and said that if Denmark considered sharing these amounts, we would be among those who would be happy to take over, ”says Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

The Danes rejected the AstraZeneca vaccine after two rarer cases of thrombosis were reported after more than 140,000 people were vaccinated.

According to Prime Minister Šimonytė, it is not yet clear what quantities of vaccine Lithuania could claim. Neighboring Latvia, as well as the Czech Republic, are already lining up to receive this vaccine.

Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys hopes that after receiving a part of the Danish vaccine, Lithuania can start mass vaccination.

“It is very likely that we will start mass vaccination and provide vaccination to those Lithuanians who think that the overall benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks by providing comprehensive information, but allowing as many people as possible to return to normal life,” he says. Health. Defense Minister Arūnas Dulkys.

It is true that around 30,000 doses of the Vaxzevria vaccine are not currently used in Lithuania. Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė declared during the government hour in the Seimas that those who want to be vaccinated with this vaccine will appear.

“Almost 174,000 have been vaccinated with that vaccine and the remnants of that vaccine are certainly not very large. If that vaccine were offered to everyone who wants to get vaccinated, we would definitely find enough people to come and get vaccinated, after evaluating all its benefits and protection, ”says I. Šimonytė.

However, at what cost Lithuania will pay for Danish AstraZeneca vaccines, the Minister of Health cannot yet answer.

“Oh, I don’t really know these terms yet, but I think it’s some kind of agreement, just sharing and I really don’t think it’s about trade, margins, etc. Maybe free too, ”said A. Dulkys.

And the population continues to rush to vaccination centers to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. It is true that the Comirnaty vaccines from BioNTech and Pfizer continue to be the most sought after. According to the nurse manager at Karoliniškės Polyclinic, she is simply being abducted by people.

“Pfizer really wants to get vaccinated and the records fill up in a few hours. AstraZeneca definitely has empty records,” says nurse manager Vaida Danielė.

Despite the problems with the vaccine supply and the Jansen vaccines frozen by Johnson & Johnson so far, the Presidency assures that several hundred thousand additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Lithuania in early June.

“The additional quantity agreed yesterday is 310 thousand doses of vaccines for Lithuania in addition. And in total, we are expected to receive about 1.5 million doses of Pfizer vaccines in the second quarter. That increase is a very significant 25 percent for the Pfizer vaccine, ”says Simon Krėpšta, presidential adviser.

And yesterday, the Minister of Health Dulkys announced that the population can receive the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine not in 12 weeks as before, but in four weeks. Health institutions should have already received such information.

“The ministry has circulated a notice stating that, in exceptional cases, the deadline for the second vaccination can be shortened. Institutions can already do that and are already doing it,” says Senior Advisor Lukas Galkus.

And, according to the ministry, educators preparing to return to contact education, as well as people awaiting surgery at a medical institution, have the opportunity to receive the second dose of AstraZeneca sooner.
