The 94-year-old monarch was on guard against the coronavirus pandemic, but has now decided to visit troops in the south-east of England.
The queen, who was not wearing a mask, said she was “happy” to have the opportunity to meet the public again and joked with a Royal Australian Air Force officer.
Elizabeth asked if the planes used by that unit had been “sent to pursue the Russians,” and the military replied, “That’s right, ma’am, it’s a lot of fun for us.”
In recent months, the British Air Force has taken over more and more Russian planes near the UK’s air borders, as tensions between Moscow and London rise.
Wednesday’s trip was just Elizabeth’s fourth appearance outside the Royal Palace since the start of the first UK quarantine introduced a year ago, as well as her first since her visit to Westminster Abbey in November.
Monarch and her 99-year-old husband, Philip, received their first dose of COVID-19 in January.
Buckingham Palace did not announce when the royal couple received the second dose, which is usually given in Britain 12 weeks after the first.
