He is the youngest and most useful European Championship player of all time, at just 20 years old.
M.Paulauskas debuted in Kaunas “Žalgiris” in 1963 when he was only 17 years old. Already two years later he was invited to the USSR national team and at the 1965 European Championship he not only became champion, but was also recognized as the best player in the championship.
While playing for the USSR national team, he won up to 10 medals, but during his long career in Žalgiris (until 1976) the talented basketball player managed to win only 2 modest titles (bronze in 1971 and 1973). Because of his dedication to the USSR team, he was named team captain.
The last performance of M.Paulauskas in the USSR national team was in 1974 at the World Championship, where the team coached by Vladimir Kondrashin defeated the American basketball players and became world champion.
Having coached the player’s career, he coached Kaunas “Žalgiris”, Anykščiai “Puntukas” (LKAL). Later he started working as a youth coach. Until 2012, he managed the Šakiai “Zanavyko” basketball players who played RKL.
