Earth Day will be celebrated in Lithuania when the lights go out on Saturday.
Everyone is encouraged to turn off the lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about planetary health, raise awareness about the importance of nature and inspire care for the environment.
This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, many countries will celebrate Earth Hour online, bringing together people from around the world to defend nature.
The Lithuanian Seimas will participate in the annual campaign together with the European Parliament, other institutions of the European Union and the parliaments of the EU Member States.
The president of the Seimas Environmental Protection Committee, Aistė Gedvilienė, invites to contribute to this initiative not only state institutions, municipalities, scientific and cultural institutions, companies, but also all those who are not indifferent to the environment, the climate and the protection of nature.
“I hope the lights out will remind each of us what we have and what we must protect,” said A. Gedvilienė al Seimas.
The Earth Hour initiative is a global movement that involves millions of people around the globe. According to the organizers, this is also a reminder that with a little daily work we can all contribute to the preservation of the environment and sustainable development.
Earth Hour was first celebrated on March 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The idea now has the support of 185 countries.
