They were detected in the laboratory of the Santara Clinics of the Vilnius University Hospital after examining 190 samples. They are all from Vilnius County.

Experts say the South African mutation poses a risk because it is more likely to become infected through vaccination or other strains.

Earlier this week, the first two cases of this variety were reported in Lithuania.

76 new cases of the British strain were also identified. They accounted for 67 percent. (64 of 96) Vilnius, 40 percent. (2 of 5) Kaunas, 18 percent. (2 of 11) Alytus, 13 percent. (4 of 31) Utena, 33 percent. (1 of 3) samples from Tauragė and (3 of 9) from Panevėžys County.

Sequencing data carried out in the laboratory of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences shows this week that among 23 samples three cases of the following variety were identified: one of the two in Kaunas, 17 percent. (1 of 6) Marijampolė and one studied samples from Panevėžys county.

The British variety is spreading faster and more deadly.

To date, a total of 1,821 samples have been sequenced and 304 cases of the British and five South African virus lines have been detected in Lithuania, according to a sequencing project coordinated by the NSPL.
