Fallen from the rocks killed 16-year-old French Olympic hope

The 16-year-old athlete died in south-eastern France, near Grenoble, where he and a group of friends climbed an alpine cliff unexplored in sport. The girl slipped, fell, and died.

Ms Douady is last year’s world youth climbing champion, winner of the bronze medal at the European Adult Championship – she is considered the future star of the sport. She won the medal at the European Championship at just 15 years old.

According to the French Climbing Federation, her technique was “brilliant”, the girl was “goal oriented and especially loved the atmosphere of the competition”.

“It is a great blow to the climbing community. The news of his death shocked friends, coaches, all members of the club. We are in mourning,” the federation wrote in an official statement, commenting on the accident.

“It was one of the most promising of the younger generation of climbers,” added Pierre-Henri Paillasson, leader of the federation.

The Chambery Escalade Club, represented by Ms. Douady, described the deceased as “a young, talented and constantly energetic woman whose loss shocked all members.”
