According to a Polish government official, the incident has signs of a Russian cyber attack.

On the websites of the National Atomic Energy Agency and the Ministry of Health, there were brief reports about the alleged leak of nuclear waste that threatens Poland from neighboring Lithuania.

Furthermore, the Twitter account of a journalist, who often writes about Russian and Eastern European affairs, was hacked and used to spread more misinformation.

False reports issued on Wednesday warned that the health and lives of Poles living in areas near the Lithuanian border were in danger. However, those messages didn’t seem to get much attention.

Stanislaw Zaryn, spokesman for the head of Poland’s security services, told the AP news agency that “the whole story seems like a typical Russian attempt” to sow suspicion and divisions among Western allies.

According to Zaryn, the latest incident is reminiscent of a similar hacking attempt last year in which false information was released about a radioactive cloud that allegedly moved to Poland from Chernobyl in Ukraine, where a nuclear disaster occurred in the 1990s.
