The term Hygge comes from Norway, but is more associated with the Danes. This word is generally used to define a state in which we feel good, or to describe something that evokes good emotions, comfort, peace. Although the term dates back to the 19th century, it became widespread around the world only a few years ago.
A Lithuanian woman was very impressed with the Danish way of life: interior designer Monika Gustaitė founded the Hygge Lietuva online store and also writes a blog on how to adapt this way of life to herself. Some people not only became more interested in this way of life, but even went to Scandinavia to see up close what hygge really came from here.
Monika said that this way of life arrived in Lithuania as early as 2016, but Lithuanians who accepted new ideas with some restraint did not immediately join hygge. However, after trying it, I have no regrets: “From experience I can see that people who learn about this philosophy are impressed by its simplicity and are happy to discover its signs in their daily life,” said Monika.
According to the woman, Lithuanians are applying hygiene ideas more and more frequently and sometimes people live based on them in this way that without knowing it: “I also notice a tendency that more and more people simply live on hygiene ideas. hygiene I have not heard of it. It just confirms that the need and the perception itself come automatically. “
The designer said that she had been following the ideas of hygge for a long time without knowing it, and said that most Lithuanians could domesticate this way of life: “In my opinion, depending on the way of life and the climate, Lithuania can really be attribute to the Norse and Scandinavians. Little by little we are persecuting the Scandinavians and, from a quality point of view, many creative, friendly and secular people live in our country. In fact, most Scandinavian ideas can be easily discovered and applied within ourselves. “
Hygge can be discovered everywhere
Monica said that when we learn to notice the playful details and strive to create hygge, it can be seen everywhere. After all, the very essence of this way of life is enjoying simple, everyday things.
“For example, I have a hygge when I ride my bike through a fragrant forest on a summer night, when we have dinner with my family and we all sit at a large table and share our impressions. Hygge is when on a cold winter afternoon I warm my bare feet by the fireplace, drinking herbal tea collected in the summer. When it rains outside the window and we are still lying in the morning beds and laughing at the memories, ”said the woman.
According to Monika, hygge can be seen in completely simple things, which we do not always notice and appreciate: “It is a preparation for the holidays. Find gifts for your loved ones. Writing letters. Collecting pine cones in green moss. They are my feet and those of my son in the sand on the beach. “
The most important thing, according to her, is to live more slowly, notice the beauty in the details and feel it. Monica said that by practicing hygge, the joy of the little things becomes a habit, just like the pleasant moments in life.
However, it is often wrongly assumed that hygge cannot promote other emotions. “All the feelings and experiences are needed. Hygge is more reminiscent of the fact that pleasure and little joys are always here, you just have to feel and see, ”revealed Monika.
How to build a Hygge at home?
Monica noted that creating hygge at home isn’t difficult, but for most, it’s still a lack of skill. There are no specific rules on how the interior of Hygge should look, but you can see the predominant colors, soft and close to nature.
“I have seen many Danish interiors, where you can find doors, walls, furniture or some other more colorful accent, painted in bright colors, but the base is still naturalistic, close to the tones of nature,” said the designer. He also added that houses should not be loaded with furniture: there should be less but of high quality.
According to her, the most important thing in hygge stylistics is the details: books, rugs, flowers, rugs, lighting and, of course, candles are extremely important. “Your Scandinavians are burning great power. Create comfort, ”Monika said.
However, the woman notes that there are other ways to create comfort. Authentic doors, floors or chests of drawers, as well as uniquely designed chandeliers or furniture not only create value, but also retain a great look even after many years.
“Materiality is very important in Hygge interiors. These are quality surfaces that do not necessarily have to be expensive. The interior of this style is also a very desirable fireplace, of course, used. Several “tame” corners, for reading, drawing or your other hobby, “Monika said.
Monika said that even a hat hanging in the right place can become an interior detail, and when the ability to “see” things appears, it is not difficult for them to find a place. “From my experience I can say that I have had to live in different levels of housing, but regardless of its luxury and size, I have always heard that guests are comfortable and do not want to rush anywhere, they want to stay longer. I think this feeling is the main indicator of hygiene in the interior.
My house has always had and is full of paintings, candles, all kinds of pretty trinkets from the forest or the beach, good pottery, wet flowers, a paid coffee maker, a plethora of books, and plenty of floor lamps. I also appreciate the older fine items. And the most important part of everyone’s home environment is good humor, warm relationship and closeness … ”, said Monika.
