The Klaipėda florist is surprised by the wishes of his compatriots: “Lithuanians like to overestimate their possibilities”

While in the ninth grade, Darius first became closely acquainted with the work of a florist during the career orientation program. Even then, the boy was fascinated with this creative profession and the idea of spinning among flowers, but then he abandoned the idea.

“At that time, the prevailing opinion was that a man and flowers are very incompatible things and he is very unmanly. On those days, if you say that the ninth wants to be a florist, it is definitely the two classmates, and some teachers will see it strangely. That’s how I launched that idea, “says Darius.

PHOTO GALLERY. Darius, a resident of Klaipda, did not shy away from the lopsided glances and realized his dream.

I first tried it in practice

So after graduating from school, his path took a slightly different direction. The guy studied the profession of a waiter-bartender, then confectionery, and at the same time started a business with like-minded people:

“We served several holidays, prepared food, and began to need the services of a florist. In order not to hire them, we decided to try it ourselves and I was the initiator who began to decorate the tables, the parties ”.

But from the beginning, Darius soon realized that he lacked basic theoretical knowledge. He decided to attend a seminar, but today he laughs and remembers the following experience:

“It was not very successful because everything happened in such high language, in complicated words and I already thought that I would never be a florist, no one would explain anything to me.”

Still, the boy did not give up and became more interested behind the scenes of this specialty. At that time he lived in Plungė and developed business, but decided to move to Klaipėda, where he had the opportunity to combine everything flexibly and learn the subtleties of floristics.

Share your knowledge

Darius is glad that later his own attitude has changed and the crooked looks of those around him no longer scare him.

“It was very clear to me that professions are neither male nor female, and what you work for is determined by your abilities, not your gender. When I was young, I may not have dared to jump in, show up, but when I started in vocational school, the circle of friends changed a lot, and that understanding.

Also, the teachers around them were very understanding and encouraged to do what they really wanted. So somehow over the years and I grew up in such a way that no one but you can decide what he wants to do in life, but it was not a matter of years or several years ”, the boy does not hide.

Darius began to take stronger steps in the field of floristics, decorating weddings and other celebrations, creating various compositions of flowers and plants. His work and skills also left their mark on the management of the school where he studied, so soon the boy was invited to teach floristics to other students.

Today, it is this activity, as Darius himself puts it, that in a good way “eats” most of his time, but the boy little by little wants to glorify and make more and more people happy with his name and his job as a florist.

The boy has realized his dream and is now doing what brings joy to the heart.

Love the naturalness and the certainty

Sharing his concept of floristics, a Klaipeda resident says that the creative process is very important to him in the first place.

“Yes, each flower ring, each ribbon costs, it takes everything to count and observe to make a profit, but creativity is also very important to me. I focus on artistic, creative floristics, for which the most important thing is to create an impression, some effect, a mood.

In commercial floristics, you want to make the biggest impression possible and as cheaply as possible, and in creative work you don’t pay much attention to that material value, the creative process is important here, ”explains Darius.

He says his own approach to floristry has changed over time. If in the past all flowers had to be bought and look impeccable, today man pays more attention to naturalness.

“Over the years, both the understanding and the taste of taste change, and the trends in floristics in the world change not every year, but almost every month. That’s probably why I began to pay attention to naturalness, certainty, the absence of kitsch.

Nature appears in my bouquet or floral composition. I don’t like jumping, I like the avant-garde, but it’s so elegant and tasteful, ”says the interlocutor.

Customer wishes often exceed capabilities

He says he’s noticing a trend lately that everyone wants giant bouquets with lots of rings and lots of paper wrapped around them, which is why commercial floristry is becoming more important to many than artistic floristry:

“And I tell our students that, without a doubt, we have to satisfy the wishes and needs of our clients, but let’s not forget that we are the creators and, sometimes, we influence that client’s desire. We are the shapers of the understanding of taste and floristics. So we have to have our own style, style, put something of our own in the bouquet. “

When it comes to customer wishes, Darius is open; many of them are quite capricious and often the desires outweigh the available possibilities.

“I think Lithuanians like to overestimate their chances and plan great vacations. Often if there is a wedding, they have to do it with a bang, even if after the wedding they will have to eat noodles.

I don’t mean those who can really make that celebration beautiful, huge, and luxurious. But not everyone can do that, ”says Darius, adding that a good florist can make something beautiful with a small amount of money, but clients should always evaluate their possibilities:

“I don’t get free flowers either, I can’t do it if clients don’t have the funds. The weddings and decorations I have performed are quite modest, but certainly not bad. I have regular clients who know what I can do with their opportunities.”

Decorating ideas are born differently

Speaking of how long it takes to come up with Christmas decorations, Darius emphasizes that it depends on a variety of things. Often it is enough to talk to customers, listen to their expectations, the colors they want, the information about the venue and the big picture is already in mind.

“If customers clearly express their preferences, everything happens very quickly, they can think here and now. But if you want something new, an invisible solution, a different ceremony, then it may take some time. In such cases, more original solutions and time to think are needed.

I have no place, in any way, any special muse from which to draw inspiration. Most of the time I need to be in a hurry, and I think the best thing is when I lie in bed, take my phone in hand and look at something, that’s the idea. “ Darius smiles and adds that he also has several florists whom he considers authorities and from them he learns techniques, compositions and other things.

While it is easier to work with clients who clearly express their preferences, the florist does not hide the fact that there have been many cases where a young man raises his hand and says that he gives up and gives him complete freedom to decorate the party:

“These cases are probably the most difficult, unless you know that that person trusts you and knows your job, then it’s easy. But if there is a new client who does not know your style, then you already have to hit him in some way, worried if he will like everything ”.

Sometimes you have to decorate the parties without seeing the customers live

Darius still remembers the first decorated wedding, which caused many challenges. The boy was approached by young people living in Ireland, with whom he only interacted remotely and never met live.

The clients returned to their homeland a few days before the wedding, so this whole situation caused a lot of excitement in the florist.

“I was so scared, so excited I didn’t even know where to put it. But I really tried hard and put a lot of heart into it, the wedding was small, but everything is cozy down to the smallest detail, ”he says.

It is true that at first he did not receive any reaction from the young people, so he was already afraid that they did not like anything, but soon he received a sincere reply with much appreciation:

“They thanked me for making the dream they had come true. For me, it was a great appreciation of the work. “

It takes both talent and knowledge

Darius says that the recipe for a good florist’s secret consists of several ingredients. He has no doubt that while technique and theoretical knowledge are very important, having an artistic streak also has a significant impact.

“We can learn, for example, to twist a bouquet into a spiral or make a composition. But we may not have that creative streak that florists have quickly and easily.

When asked if I am talented or do I need a lot of work, I would not say that I was never talented and it was something of a problem for me. But there was no way he was lifting his finger either and it all became very easy.

With my example, I can say that it takes a lot of work to achieve something, to be interested, to do something different. That is why we need talent, knowledge and creativity, and it is not so easy to develop, ”says a Klaipeda resident.

He also says that he realized that nothing is happening fast, so now he is doing everything very consciously, without rushing, and therefore gradually gaining the sympathy of the people.

Dream of your own workshop in the future

Darius reveals that he has repeatedly heard the question from close friends and passersby why he doesn’t have his own flower room. But the boy is convinced that not everyone who can do something well has to turn it into a business.

“Yes, I dream about it, but I don’t think it’s necessary. At the moment, I don’t think I can give Klaipeda anything that isn’t here. And if I open the same salon that is already there and provide the same services, I don’t think I will be very successful.

I dream of a place that doesn’t look much like a living room, but works more on the principle of a workshop. Maybe my attitude will change in the future, but for now I keep these dreams and I continue doing what I like and giving a lot of joy ”, concludes Darius with a smile.
