When Tv3.lt contacted R. Baškienė, she clarified that the elderly had to receive the vaccine at the Antakalnis polyclinic. According to her, according to all the rules, older people should receive a message on the first call and only later in a message, but this is not always the case.

“I think the fault lies with the polyclinic where the person was registered. By the way, when her mother went to get vaccinated, she was not on the lists, she was a child from Ainošius to Keipošius, an old man, it turns out that it was a mistake due to her personal identification code. The Antakalnis Polyclinic also responded to complaints from a member of the Vilnius City Council. According to their representatives, the whole situation is a misunderstanding:

Paulius Vaitekėnas, a media relations specialist in Vilnius City Municipality, explains to tv3.lt that all medical institutions in the capital have been instructed to communicate with older people by phone.

“Provide clear and specific information about the COVID-19 vaccine and the vaccination process. However, when starting the vaccination of older people, there may be cases where the vaccination information was provided only by telephone message, ”says P. Vaitekėnas.

Julijanas Gališanskis, representative of the Ministry of Health (SAM), affirms that at the national level, personal health institutions can choose how to inform the population: only by message, only by phone or both.

R. Baškienė and his parents weren’t the only ones who had trouble trying to get vaccinated against COVID-19. When the woman shared the incident on social media, comments with similar stories spread through her post.

She says she has no complaints about the polyclinic staff, because the vaccination procedure itself was carried out in a professional manner. Still, the woman was disappointed by the lack of adequate infrastructure and the extremely complicated process of trying to vaccinate an elderly man with movement and vision problems. The heating network workers told the woman that the next time the car was parked in the same spot, it could be towed.

“I understand that visiting elderly people with mobility problems requires a lot of resources on the part of medical personnel, but some polyclinics do it … But it is sad that even upon arrival there were no conditions to board. {…} And how many people who have mobility problems and cannot come will not receive the vaccine, and not because they do not want to be vaccinated ”, Asta is surprised.

Vaccinations are possible at home, but not always

According to J. Gališanskis, SAM representative, older people can be vaccinated at home, but not all vaccines used in Lithuania are suitable for this purpose.

AstraZeneca can be transported and used at home. BioNTech & Pfizer vaccine can also be transported and used for home vaccination following changes to the marketing authorization approved by the European Medicines Agency. Health facilities must provide special conditions for the transport of this vaccine.

“Moderna” vaccines cannot be transported due to their storage characteristics, so they are only used for vaccination in vaccination centers ”, explains the SAM representative.

According to P. Vaitekėnas, older people are also vaccinated at home in Vilnius, but only a few hundred have been vaccinated so far.

For older people who have difficulty getting to a designated vaccination center, the municipality also offers transportation services. An average of 56 calls are received per day for transportation to mobile points and vaccination sites.
