On Tuesday, the president and the board of the Seimas discussed the work of the spring session of the Seimas, the situation of the management of the coronavirus and other current topics.

“We are already looking into the post-pandemic period. <...> We have planned certain initiatives, they are related to economic and social problems, “said G. Nausėda after the meeting.

According to Seimas spokesperson V.Čmilytm-Nielsen, issues in the field of health, the priorities of the Budget and Finance Committee, issues in the field of education, including the National Agreement on Education, as well as the situation of human rights were also discussed.

He explained his position on A.Toliat

Speaking about the company law, the president said that he had not seen the bill until now, but expected the process to go smoothly. G.Nausėda said that he hoped the Seimas would seek the most appropriate solutions and seek unanimity. He also commented on the much debated Istanbul Convention and his own adherence to priest Tololia.

“I, as president, will closely follow this process and believe that this process must finally take legal form, which we have neither done nor prevented so far. The initiatives are completely welcome.

The Istanbul Convention is a serious document that addresses both violence against women and the introduction of the term ‘gender’. <...> I look at it very carefully and see that some of the provisions are also related to some of the consequences for our education and even freedom of expression. Therefore, we must consider this document very well, but decide on the ratification itself at a later stage. Because what I lack most today is cultural debate.

When I spoke of A. Toliat, I spoke of him as a person who wanted to initiate a discussion through cultural means, but his invitation was not answered by that cultural means.

Today, I can be happy to see some positive results, I see increasingly serious and detailed articles covering both aspects of the Istanbul Convention, and in this way we are moving in the right direction, ”said G. Nausėda.

The president said that he disrespected another opinion, and only illustrated his position with the example of priest A. Tololia. He also noted that he was not in favor of division, but of unification, but wanted to draw attention to the current culture of discussion in Lithuania.

“I think the change in our discussion culture has taken place over a much longer period of time and we need to get back to a respectful tone, respect for someone who thinks otherwise. Today, I miss the respect from both sides for the respect for those who think otherwise. But I illustrated my resignation with the priest Toliat, because he became an immediate victim of this debate, because he should not be.

In this place, I look forward and look forward to greater focus, harmony and respect on important issues of the 21st century, ”said the President.

Previously, the president assured support for the priest Algirdas Toliatas, who asked on his social network to sign a petition against the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. G. Nausėda then claimed that a “public inquisition” had been formed in the country.

“Today, a public inquisition has been formed in Lithuania. People who imagine the power of mingling with dissident filth do so in an unappealable, and sometimes simply disgusting way, and consider themselves unpunished. I think we don’t have to put up with this.

Today, I am on the side of the gentleman, the esteemed priest A. Toliat, mainly because I am on his side as a human being. How he represents the position is a derivative question, “said G. Nausėda.

The president of Seimas declared that in the near future it is expected that all doubts arising from the Convention will be dispelled and questions of public interest will be answered.

“I agree that the arrival of the Istanbul Convention at the Seimas should be the last stage of a long process. It is very important that those issues that provoke a very hot and heated debate are clarified and debated in other formats. For my part, I intend to contribute to this debate, even to start it, and it is very important that both human rights experts and lawyers and people who work in helpdesks have a voice and that we can discuss some of the concepts that raise questions.

I think this debate is extremely important and it definitely makes sense. I hope that in the first half of the year before the start of the autumn session we will have it, ”said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
