Another drama from a Russian ski star: a broken stick, tears and a gift from the judges

At the end of the championship in Germany, in the men’s 50-kilometer race, Bolshunov competed for the last meter for gold with Norwegians Johannes Klaeb and Emil Iversen.

The Russian, who was in first place, made a decisive mistake after contact with J. Klaebo by putting a pole under the skis and thus breaking it.

On the left with a stick leading, A. Bolshunov missed not only J. Klaebo, but also E. Iversen, and immediately after the goal, he threw a stick in the snow demonstratively and shed tears.

However, that did not end there. The judges reviewed the incident several times and finally decided to disqualify the first seed, Klaebo, for obstructing the opponent.

As a result of this decision, gold went to E. Iversen and A. Bolshunov was adorned with silver. Norwegian Simen Krueger won the bronze medal in this way.

The Norwegian team appealed against Mr. Klaeb’s disqualification, but it was dismissed.

A large part of the ski fans criticized the decision of the judges and called it a gift to the Russian, claiming that A. Bolshunov himself was taking an unreasonable and no less culpable risk in the collision of the athletes.

A. Bolshunov also finished dramatically at the Ski World Cup stage in January, when Joni Maeki was outscored by the Finns in the last few meters, and the Russian was outrageously unable to control his emotions. The 24-year-old Russian struck his opponent, who passed him, with a stick, and his anger spilled over after the shot, when he rushed in and deliberately aimed at the Finn and knocked him to the ground. In doing so, A. Bolshunov obtained a disqualification for his entire team.

Czech skier Terez Beranova said after the incident that Bolshunov behaved like a monkey and that Russian athletes are generally stubborn.
