“Dear residents of Pašilaičiai, Viršuliškės, Šeškinė and Fabijoniškės, there is a real threat to your health, as 6 lanes of Šiaurin calle street are planned to be built near your residential buildings, kindergartens and schools,” we read in the Facebook group “Pašilaičiai community”.
Like-minded people on the initiative say they were more scared at the idea of building 6 lanes. Although no one is against city development, according to residents, the six-lane sleeping district doesn’t really need it.
“We understand that it is sometimes difficult for Pašilaičiai residents to get to Ukmergės street, therefore it would take 2, maybe even 4 new lanes to get directly to this road. But who needs 6 bands? At the same time, if millions are allowed for the construction of a new highway, the city council could allocate them to the installation of parks, cultural houses, playgrounds or other recreational areas ”, says Saulė, a supporter of the initiative.
According to residents, the project is old and does not meet modern requirements, and a review of various European Union documents often shows that cities should pay more attention to biodiversity and afforestation of residential areas. All of this is not in line with the current actions of the city.
The proponents of the idea raised some key arguments as to why a new street is not worth building: Sleeping areas are designed for a quiet and healthy rest, so they must be protected from noise and pollution.
With the arrival of Northern Street, many houses would find themselves only 100 feet from a new source of noise: uninterrupted traffic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; In many districts of Vilnius, especially in Šeškinė, Fabijoniškės and Pašilaičiai, the air pollution rate already allowed is exceeded several times. Pollution from automobiles and the effects of particulate emissions in our country kill most of the people among developed countries.
North Street would further compare the level of pollution in the living environment; In accordance with the requirements of Vilnius city and government laws. general plan, the mentioned districts obviously lack vegetation, green areas. The construction of North Street would not only eliminate the possibility of establishing green areas forever, but it would also destroy the existing patches of natural nature.
Above all, for any new street, residents would like places that connect communities: houses of culture, libraries, cafes, parks that can compensate for the lack of green areas, etc. Now residents of the neighborhoods listed above have to drive to Old Town for coffee, spending time with friends, etc.
“We wrote, we contacted the municipality, which promised to take our requests into account. Meanwhile, a general plan is being developed and will be reviewed by various state institutions. We hope that these institutions also take into account the inconvenience caused to the population and avoid this project ”, adds Saulė.
We remind you that Šiaurinė Street is a 2.8 kilometer long, 6-lane street (two lanes will be used for public transport) that connects the Western Ring Road with Fabijoniškės.
The construction of North Street should increase the performance of the cars. The street will cross Kalvarijų, Geležinio Vilkas, Ukmergės, Justiniškių and Laisvės avenue streets, and sidewalks and bicycle lanes are planned nearby, giving the street vitality and urbanity.
The installation of the new street should begin in the second half of this year. 35 million will be allocated for the first stage. EU, municipal and state budgetary funds. The total value of the project is about 90 million. euros.
