Istanbul Convention evaluated: after such an experience, it’s hard to trust

Therefore, for a long time, when even the most defensive human rights documents are considered, they will be read with mistrust and fear that there is nothing between the lines.

And it is at a time when the quarantine has changed lives, we live a closed life, without entertainment, businesses are losing, someone is not receiving support, when all intellectual forces have to concentrate on stopping the pandemic and mitigating its harmful effects. In such an electrified psychological environment, the ratification and prevention of violence against women and domestic violence.

In such a stressful and tense environment, the public may be faced with any information that is not clear enough. And any conspiracy theory reaches people’s consciousness faster. Therefore, it is not appropriate to consider it calmly, to evaluate the pros and cons.

Many are concerned about the perseverance and rush to ratify the convention in the national parliament. The Convention unites 47 states. It is a detailed document of about 30 pages that enters into force in a particular country once it has been ratified by the national parliament. 11 states have not ratified the convention and their claim is being discussed in Poland. It is implemented through national legislation, but is subject to international control.

The title says that the purpose of the document is to protect women, but the text explains that countries that have ratified the convention have instructions to protect victims regardless of their gender, race, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, I quote from the press.

This shows the potential tensions in the application of the Convention on the religious beliefs of the people and the possible ignorance of the spiritual connection between parents and children. Aggressive advocacy for children’s rights is already disappointing. It is feared that the authority of parents as spiritual leaders may be affected by the implementation of the provisions of the Convention when rescuing child victims of violence due, for example, to subjective or partial treatment, a bad translation of a document.

It is feared that children will be distracted between various value orientations, parenting may become ineffective, children may lose their psychological connection with the family, they may not experience the emotional experiences necessary for the child’s life provided by the family. It is feared that children will grow up without a role model to help them identify as male or female. In an embroidered atmosphere, the carelessness in the translation of the text irritated the Lithuanian people interested in the convention.

For example, the biological phenomenon of sex has been treated as a social phenomenon. Even more interesting seemed to be the further explanation that gender is not a gift of nature, but some formed traits that can be attributed to one gender or another, as by agreement. Such an interpretation greatly expands the limits of gender identification.

Subsequent comments explain that this is not an accurate translation. Jog’s text refers to the established traditions in society of assigning certain roles to people of different genders and, as they may be undesirable, they lead to violence. Or that violence makes paper suffer.

But what is written is followed. And here all kinds of conclusions and solutions are possible. Perhaps the saying “healthy baby” is understood as humiliating and derogatory for a woman? Perhaps because of that saying, she will be recognized as a victim?

We are in a whirlwind of ever-changing living conditions that make planning for the future difficult. The serious inheritance is alcoholism and other addictive disorders. However, we also have laws for the prevention of violence, established responsibility for violent crimes and the re-socialization of perpetrators according to the capacities of the country. If any law is missing, it can be passed. As Lithuania needs.

So why, when people already feel logical and not very logical control at every step, still transfer part of sovereignty to someone far from our lives?

During a world tragedy, faith is strengthened and gives hope for the future. Therefore, there is a sensitive response to the Convention statement: “The Parties shall ensure that culture, customs, religion, traditions or so-called” honor “are not used as justification for any act of violence that is within the scope of this Convention. “

Violence in general must be eradicated from relations between peoples. Therefore, it is questionable that improved prevention and protection of violence against a social group, a gender, could be even more gender-specific. Creating an image of a male abuser makes the marriage unattractive.

A society without violence is a beautiful but unfulfilled dream. The propensity to violence indicates deformities of the personality of the abuser: the individual lacks self-control, is aggressive due to accumulated stress, mental illness or addictions that destroy the personality. Many perpetrators fail to predict or evaluate the consequences of their behavior.

They need psychological help, re-socialization. Many outbreaks of violence are caused by stress due to unfavorable social reasons: unemployment, poverty, war conditions. But up close your own pains look better.
