Abandoned Lithuanian boxers: unfavorable Olympic selection system will not be changed Sports

The excitement over the selection of boxing competitions came after the cancellation of a world qualification tournament in Paris in June to motivate a difficult epidemiological situation in February. After the cancellation of this competition, the strongest Lithuanian boxers practically lost the opportunity to fight for the Olympic entries.

In an official letter, LTOK and LBF asked the IOC Special Boxing Commission to review and adjust the selection system for the Tokyo Olympics boxing competition to be applicable to all states and all athletes.

At the meeting, however, Breno Pontes, a member of the IOC Special Boxing Commission Task Force, regrettably confirmed that the updated Olympic boxing selection system would not change. Morinari Watanabe, chairman of the IOC Special Boxing Commission Task Force, also made this announcement in an official statement to the National Olympic Committees and National Boxing Federations on Monday.

This means that the Olympic tickets for the Tokyo Olympics in the summer will be distributed in the US and European qualifiers, with the remainder distributed according to the new qualifying system.

The European Qualifiers in Paris in June will feature athletes whose fights were canceled in a tournament last March due to the deteriorating epidemiological situation. This means that the only Lithuanian representative, Gabrielė Stonkutė, 19, will compete in this competition.

For other Lithuanian boxers, the only option remains to enter the Olympics through a new qualification system. The 53 tickets to be contested in the canceled World Election Tournament will be distributed equally among athletes from four continents, 13 weight categories. This means that one of the best Lithuanian boxers, the European champion Eimantas Stanionis, is missing the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.
