“We had to solve the problems inherited from the stalled reconstruction urgently and we finally managed to move this stone,” says Environment Minister Simonas Gentvilas.
The critically delayed EU-funded Lithuanian zoo infrastructure renovation project should be completed in 2023. at the center. Its value is 18.3 million. euros.
Despite the efforts of the Environment Ministry, the Minister does not rule out the possibility that the project will fail if the construction tender fails. In that case, the EU aid should be repaid. “We hope that the whole team has put in enough fuses to ensure that the reconstruction of the zoo does not affect the fate of the national stadium and that we can be proud of it in three years,” says Simon Gentvilas.
Specific construction work must begin in early summer with a contract with the contractor for this work. The contractor will be announced in mid-April following the completion of a public tender announced last Friday.
Even in the interwar period: 1938. – The infrastructure of the zoo established in Kaunas will fundamentally change: brown bears and wolves, lynxes, otters, foxes, various species of monkeys, cheetahs, bison, camels, kangaroos, corsacks, small cats, pheasants , etc. They will settle in the new aviaries.
The African savannah will surprise not only giraffes, zebras, but also a new rhino exhibition. Mixed exhibition aviaries will also be built: kangaroos will live with black swans and ostrich emus, brown bears with gray wolves, etc.

A new space “Mažylių Zoo” is being created with rabbits, poultry, goats, etc. for children. The upper and lower part of the zoo area will be connected by a new elevator bridge. The infrastructure is designed in such a way that it would be convenient for people with disabilities to access and view the exhibits.
At the end of construction, preparatory work will be carried out: the territory will be planted, aviaries and terrariums will be installed, huge aquariums will be filled, new species will be brought to new houses and they will be housed in them.
During the construction period, the zoo will be closed to visitors, but educational activities will continue uninterrupted.
