“The sketch by sculptor M. Gaubas was chosen by decision of foundation members, sponsors and the voting public,” the UK Chodkevičius Charity and Support Foundation, which organized the contest, announced on Sunday.
In 2021, the 400th anniversary of the death of the Grand Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the eldest of the Vilnius Voivodeship and the eldest of Samogitia, the soldier JK Chodkevičius, is commemorated. This year is declared the year of his memory.
“The idea and sketch of the sculptor M. Gaubas will continue to be developed and developed, but it is planned that the monument to JK Chodkevičius, at the initiative of the foundation and with the help of private sponsors, will be erected in the courtyard of the Image Gallery of Vilnius Chodkevičius Palace (4 Didžioji Street, Vilnius) this year “, in the fund’s report.
According to the sculptor M. Gaubas, the personality of JK Chodkevičius was a great discovery for him.
“The world knows him and respects him, remembers his enormous contribution. It seems that we have forgotten, underestimated, we know the surname, which is a warrior, a leader, and the details are lost somewhere. After receiving an invitation to create a sketch of the monument, I read books about the battles won by JK Chodkevičius, half understanding Polish, and watched films in which the visualizations and strategies of the battles were recreated. I became even more interested and admired how much such a modest man could create: build monasteries, found churches, schools ”, says M. Gaubas.
According to Arūnas Gelūnas, director of the Lithuanian Art Museum, located in the Chodkevičius Palace in Vilnius, the idea presented by M. Gaubas helps to awaken the historical memory and symbolically restore the personality marks of JK Chodkevičius, first of all the famous soldier , for his long-time family home – Chodkevičius Palace.
“He is also creating a new art object in the language of modern sculpture, which will undoubtedly become an interesting attraction for Vilnius residents and city guests,” notes A. Gelūnas.
According to Algirdas Žebrauskas, winner of the National Prize, the work of M. Gaubas is very talented in the courtyard of the historic palace, the idea of sculpture is intentionally focused on historical artistic expression.
“The composition is simple, the background is a relief of historical signs, in the background of which we can see a sculpture by hetman GDM. The sculptor chose to emphasize the brilliance of the armor, a patron and builder of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of exceptional talent, who gained wide international recognition, next to the inner facade of the closed museum courtyard, preserving the courtyard space of the historic palace. We are waiting for the discussions, I hope they do not sink, but that they help to achieve the goal of the Jonas Karolis Charity and Support Foundation: to create and implement a brilliant historical-artistic accent for one of the most prominent personalities of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. at Chodkevičius Palace, Vilnius ”, said A. Žebrauskas.
