The presidency does not agree with Šimonytė’s proposal on EVS: the content of the debate is inappropriate

“The president relies on the powers conferred by the Constitution to represent the state. Could managers do it alternatively? Lithuania would probably be the only country in the European Union to do so. This would look very strange in the eyes of other countries.” A. Skaisgirytė told LRT Radio on Thursday.

“We did not agree with this from the beginning and we do not believe that this system, which has been in place for 12 years, should be changed now for any reason,” he said.

A. Skaisgirytė did not hide the general lack of understanding as to why the issue of representation in EVS has been raised so intensely recently. In his opinion, the discussion on the representation of Lithuanian leaders in the EVS prevails, and its content, in view of the range of problems caused by COVID-19, is inadequate.

“It just came to our attention then. There is a mood as if someone (discussion – ELTA) had imposed something. At a time when the country is facing a pandemic, when there are very important issues to address: vaccination, recovery economic, overcoming the pandemic stagnation, there is also the psychological health of the population, increased unemployment.

Instead of focusing on and addressing these issues that really concern everyone, there is a debate about what will happen in Brussels. Sometimes the content of the discussion seems inappropriate, “summarized A. Skaisgirytė.

On Wednesday, I. Šimonytė stated that he had discussed the issue of greater representation in EVS with the president on Monday. According to the politician, it would be possible to return to the system in Lithuania, when the top managers shared the functions of representation in the EVS. However, the Prime Minister emphasized, it is not clear whether the President will agree to this.

Recently, the question of whether the President should continue to represent the EVS has sparked considerable debate between the Presidency and some Conservative representatives. The latter argue that the Prime Minister should go to the EVS because, according to them, it addresses issues that are more the prerogative of the Government.
