Lithuanian Union of Educators: No rush to tackle important educational issues

2020 In December, the Seimas approved the Government’s program. It includes reducing the number of students in the classroom. The program states that a steady increase in teacher pay will be guaranteed and by 2024 it will be 130 percent. The principles of the structure of the workload of teachers and the formation of positions will be reviewed, and the most important criterion for determining the economic remuneration will be direct work with children.

Meanwhile, the plan of measures for the implementation of the Government program no longer includes the reduction of the number of students in the classrooms, it has simply disappeared, points out the LSSD. The term when the average teacher salary is 130 percent. the average salary is also missing.

The Lithuanian Union of Educators also wonders when the remuneration of full-time teachers will be revised and improved in general. Andrius Navickas, president of the Lithuanian Union of Education Workers, declares that the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Jurgita Šiugždinienė has promised that a working group will be established at the end of January, but the position is already changing in a remote discussion with MESM management. And for this, he said, an unconvincing argument was chosen, supposedly that the MMSM lacked the human resources to organize two working groups at the same time.

“This reminds teachers of the procrastination and procrastination tactics used in the previous SMS. In the meantime, this is one of the priorities announced by the current government: review and improve the salary of full-time teachers as soon as possible.” says A. Navickas.

ŠMSM also intends to postpone the exams. The Lithuanian Union of Education Workers does not support it. In LSSD’s view, such a decision may be to the detriment of graduates, and some of the measures offered to assist them (eg, the principles for selecting counselors) raise several questions. “Is it not the case that” when there are many babysitters, the child can be left without a head, “but responsibility for the results will still have to be borne only by trained educators,” the LSSD report analyzes.

The union is under the impression that representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports are reverting to the same procrastination tactics, not rushing to tackle important educational issues, although they are presented as one of the most important works on the government program.
