The Vilnius Public Health Office “Vilnius Healthier” reports that yesterday (February 22), due to the unfavorable conditions of dispersion of pollutants and transport of polluted air mass from the south, pollution by particles (PM10) increased in Vilnius . The exceedance of the daily limit value for PM10 was recorded at the Vilnius Žirmūnai Air Quality Research Station.
Pollutant concentrations have risen steadily across the country since Sunday. As assessed by the Environmental Protection Agency, it is likely that due to unfavorable weather conditions today (February 23) the daily limit value for PM10 will be exceeded.
Office professionals remember that due to their small diameter, PM10 particles easily enter and accumulate in the lungs, causing coughing and sneezing. Particularly worsens the health of people with asthma, bronchitis. The greatest risk for the elderly, children, residents with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
Recommendations for residents in case of increased urban ambient air pollution:
- residents, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and those suffering from allergic diseases, chronic diseases of the respiratory and circulatory system, should be outside as little as possible, avoid walking near busy streets and intersections;
- It is recommended to avoid active physical activity in the open air (sports, work field), especially for the elderly, children, pregnant women and those who suffer from allergic diseases, chronic respiratory and circulatory system diseases;
- protect the respiratory system by wearing personal protective equipment – FFP2 or FFP3 respirator (with or without valves). According to the occupational health and safety standards of China and the United States, N95 and N99 respirators are suitable;
- seal the windows; if possible, it is recommended to ventilate the premises with air conditioning with filters;
- it is recommended to close the windows tightly while driving;
- wet cleaning the surface of the house where dust accumulates (floor covering, window sills, curtains, carpets, televisions, computers and their monitors);
- if you feel unwell, see a doctor.
