In the official match, R. Štelmaher only managed one victory and suffered five defeats in six European Championship qualifying games, in which the Latvians played without their best basketball players.

In the summer, Latvia lost both matches to Estonia and Lithuania during the Baltic Road tournament in Tallinn.

R.Štalmeher, 46, a long-time former basketball player for the Latvian team, has been coaching the national team since August 1, 2019, when he replaced Arnis Vecvagars.

Ainars Bagatskis’ Latvians, who reached the European Championship quarterfinals with Kristaps Porzingis in 2017, then did not enter major tournaments, fighting without their NBA and, in most cases, without Euroleague players.

With A.Vecvagars at the helm of the national team, they were left without the world championship, and with R.Štelmaher, without the European championships.

In the selection for the 2022 European Championships, the Latvians in Group H were overtaken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (5-1) and Greece (4-2), who won tickets to next year’s championships, in addition to Bulgaria (2 -4).

R.Štelmaher, who has played for Vilnius “Ryte” for several seasons, began his coaching career in 2009, when he briefly managed Vilnius “Perl” and Pasvalys “Pienovaigždės”.
