Russia was the first country to register a COVID-19 vaccine in August, when the final stages of clinical trials had not yet been completed. Since then, the Sputnik V vaccine has been approved in more than two dozen countries around the world.

“Today we announce that we have registered the third vaccine: CoviVac,” Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a government meeting broadcast on state television.

“Already in mid-March the first 120,000 doses will be distributed to the population,” Mišustinas told the Cabinet of Ministers.

The efficacy of the skeptical Sputnik V vaccine was confirmed earlier this month in an article in The Lancet medical journal.

Russia is fighting a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences across the country by launching a mass vaccination campaign.

However, recent data showed that COVID-19 mortality in Russia remains one of the highest in the world.

President Vladimir Putin announced in October that the country had registered a second vaccine, EpiVacCorona, which, according to health officials, will begin mass production this month.

Mishustin said on Saturday that Russia had produced 10 million. Sputnik dose and 80 thousand. EpiVacCorona, developed by the Siberian Vektor laboratory.

In announcing the third vaccine, the prime minister said: “Today, Russia is the only country that already has three COVID-19 vaccines.”

CoviVac was developed by the Chumakov state center in Moscow. The vaccine is based on a different method than Sputnik and EpiVacCorona, which uses an inactivated virus.

The last stage of clinical trials is scheduled to be completed in March, which will involve 3,000 people. Participants. Currently it is recommended to vaccinate people under 60 years of age.
