Workers will return to the Lentvaris crossing: this is the first time this technology will be used in Lithuania

The Lentvaris settlement is divided in half by the international railway. This has caused many inconveniences both to the inhabitants of the city and to those who walk through it for many years. Cars had to stop and wait up to 40 minutes at the junction. For almost 30 years there has been talk of the need to remodel this crossing.

The crossing barriers were falling down very frequently and the trains often ran one after the other, so the stopped drivers had to waste a lot of time. Many people from the Trakai district cross the crossing every day: they go to work, take the children to school.

According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, Director of the Lithuanian Highway Administration (LAKD), which is implementing the project, this crossing is one of the largest unrebuilt single-level rail crossings in the Baltic States.

“This is a large-scale project that will improve communication not only for the population, but also for institutions as important as firefighters and doctors, for whom every minute is usually important. It will be safer to cross the railroad both by car and on foot, and the queues in which people waste their time will become history, ”said R. Lipkevičius.

Construction company Tilsta is rebuilding the railroad crossing and construction company Tilsta is installing a car tunnel. The total value of the works amounts to 20.7 million. euro, said the press release.

Will be applied for the first time

Reconstruction work began in September last year. Now a technological break has been announced: currently only underground tunnel assembly works are underway and major works are scheduled to resume in March. Construction works from December 15th. until March 15. they are not implemented in all projects implemented by LAKD.

According to Ernesto Stonys, project manager of the contractor UAB Tilsta, currently part of the necessary communication infrastructure is already installed: a parking lot at the junction of the underground railway and a temporary road on Dzūk calle street, a temporary road on Klev alley ,, a large part of engineering networks (domestic and storm water, water supply, gas pipeline, communication networks). Part of the retaining wall structures are also installed.

In the northern part of the city, at the junction, there is a construction site in the excavation, where the elements of the construction of the tunnel frame are manufactured. After the technological breakdown, these elements are expected to move to the design position.

“For the first time in Lithuania, the technology will be used for the installation of a tunnel, when the tunnel structures are blocked without interrupting the train traffic. First, the Verona system of temporary support structures will be installed under the railway. Once installed, two tunnel elements will be pushed into the design position with the help of special jacks.

At the same time, the soil is excavated and removed in parallel from inside the tunnel. Pushing the tunnel elements does not stop the train traffic, it only reduces their speed. When the tunnel is closed, the Verona system will be dismantled, said E. Stonys about the tunnel’s construction technology.

This type of proprietary technology is widely used throughout the world. The partners of the contractor UAB Tilsta from Italy have installed around 1000 objects using it. In the Baltic countries, this technology is being used for the first time in Tartu, Estonia, where construction began last year on a pedestrian tunnel, three times smaller than the future one in Lentvaris. In Lithuania, the project is being implemented in this way for the first time.

Planned traffic restrictions

The crossing is scheduled to close in March, the exact date will be released to the public as soon as it is known. Car traffic will stop at Vokės Street. (from Kęstučio street to the ring), Geležinkelio str. (from pakalnės street to the ring), Fabriko street. (from Sodų St. to the ring road). Pedestrians will be able to cross the railway through the existing pedestrian tunnel at the train station.

A new parking lot has been installed on Dzūkų Street, where residents will be able to leave their cars and cross the underground passage to the train station. On the other hand, to cross the railroad, residents can leave their vehicles at the Maxima shopping center.

The project contractor UAB Tilsta is also committed to hiring transportation to transfer children to educational institutions, since after closing the crossing, parents will not be able to drive from one side of the city to the other. The service will be provided to children attending “Šilas”, “Svajonėlė” kindergartens, Lentvaris primary school, Henrikas Senkevičius gym, Motiejus Šimelionis gym and “Versm ys” gym.

According to the contract, the reconstruction of the crossing and the construction of the tunnel are scheduled for September this year.
