There will be no traditional fairs

The Kaziukas Fair website is still decorated with the inscription “Neriam į Kaziukas! 2021 March 5-7, 2021 ”, but only slightly below the information that“ given the situation in COVID-19, March 5-7 The Kaziukas Fair will not take place ”.

However, the organizers also have some ideas for this year, they just do not reveal what it could be, no decisions have been made yet.

“In March, the Kaziukas fair is the kind Vilnius residents are used to, it will not happen. However, the more detailed decisions will be available within a week after they have been approved.” 15 minutes Paulius Vaitekėnas, Media Relations Specialist at the Vilnius Municipality Marketing and Communication Department, reported.

Kaziukas isn’t the only holiday that has recently been canceled or moved.

There were no public Christmas events, the Christmas fair did not move near the Cathedral Square fir tree, and the Vilnius Festival of Lights was moved, which had to illuminate the city during Vilnius’ birthday from January 22 to 25.

It is promised to take place after the quarantine, tentatively, in August.

Last year he hesitated but kept

A year ago, there were also doubts about whether the Kaziukas Fair should be held. Although several outbreaks of COVID-19 have already been reported around the world and in Europe, only one case has been reported in Lithuania (a coronavirus was detected on February 28 in a woman returning from Italy a few days ago). So it was decided to organize the traditional open air fair in Vilnius.

Then the Ministry of Health recommended avoiding mass events, and then Minister Aurelijus Veryga recommended canceling all mass events, as it is a great medium for the spread of infections, not only COVID-19, but also flu and other, but crowds. they went to the joust.

The organizers abandoned last minute projects that were supposed to be carried out indoors and moved them to the city squares. Traders had to comply with personal hygiene requirements and have a disinfectant liquid.

A few weeks after the fair, Mayor Remigijus Šimašius 15 minutes He told the studio that he did not believe the Kaziukas fair should be canceled, although he had received criticism for its organization. However, the consequences were not felt.

The tradition of the Kaziukas Fair has its origin in the processions of the Holy King Casimir, which have been carried out since 1604.

It takes place every year, the next weekend until St. Casimir Day, March 4.

Even during the Soviet era, the fair was held, perhaps not as widely as before World War II or after Lithuania regained its independence.

In the 20th century, the tradition of the fair was interrupted only by wars.
