Crvena zvezda was expected on February 4 in Kaunas, but for the first time Žalgiris had to postpone the Euroleague match due to the COVID-19 case in the rival team.
With several players from the Belgrade club, the Euroleague match was postponed until the end of February, but last week Crvena zvezda started the Serbian Cup in Novi Sad.
In the quarter-finals, the Belgrade team defeated Krugujevac’s Radnički by 61 points, broke Belgrade’s Partizan 79:78 in the semi-finals and defeated Belgrade’s mega team 73:60 in the final on Sunday.
“I would not like to comment much on the situation we were in before arriving in Novi Sad, we will talk about it in the next few days. This situation has spread all over the world and we also had to go through it, ”said Crjan Zvezda’s manager Dejan Radonjičius after the final.
Due to COVID-19, Crvena zvezda could not count on five legionnaires during the Serbian Cup. Corey Walden, Langston Hall, Landry Nnoko, Duop Reath and Quino Colom did not go to Novi Sad.
Twelve players joined the tournament, Crvena zvezda, adding several young players. It is true that leaders were not lacking.
Dejan Davidovac and Johnny O’Bryant scored the most points in the Crvena zvezda final: 14 points each. Markas Simonovičius added 12 points and Brankas Lazičius 10 points. In the semi-finals, Jordan Loyd was the biggest contributor to the corner victory over perennial rival Partizan.
Kaunas “Žalgiris” also won the cup over the weekend, having achieved the KMT trophies following victories against “Neptūnas” from Klaipėda and “Lietkabelis” from Panevėžys.
The clubs will return to the Euroleague this week. “Žalgiris” will travel to Spain, where a meeting with Šarūnas Jasikevičius and his coach Barcelona, who also won the cup over the weekend, awaits him on Thursday.
The match postponed by Žalgiris and Crvena zvezda from February 4 will take place in Kaunas on February 23.
