Landsberg on Lavrov’s statement: this is typical for Russia

Landsberg responded to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s statement to the Russian media that Russia was ready to break off relations with the EU.

“It is typical for Russia to impose the rules of the game on the European Union. The EU should not be provocative when that happens,” Landsberg said.

According to him, the EU should adopt and adhere to a common foreign policy strategy towards Russia. At the moment, according to the minister, the main problem in relations is the poisoning and arrest of the Russian opponent Alexei Navaln.

“I think there must be a clear strategy for what the EU is trying to achieve, what plan should be followed.” Obviously, the main problem is that the main leader of the Russian opposition (Navaln – ELTA) had been the victim of an attempted poisoning, had to be treated in Germany, was arrested on his return, was tried and is now in prison. This is the main problem. I think the EU must focus on this particular issue: it must be liberated, it must be able to stand in elections that are fair. The EU is fighting for these values, “said G. Landsbergis.

“It is still a matter for Russia, if the fight for these values is a problem, if it requires a rupture of relations, it is their choice. However, this should not deter the EU from fighting for what is right,” he added.

Previously, Lavrov threatened to sever relations with the EU if Brussels imposed new sanctions on the country.

His country is determined to do so, Lavrov said in an interview, excerpts of which were posted on his ministry’s website on Friday. “We don’t want to be isolated from world life, but we must be prepared for that. If you want peace, you have to prepare for war,” Lavrov said.

Russia-EU relations have notably cooled down recently due to the imprisonment of opposition politician A. Navaln.
