In December, Putin explained that he had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus due to his age: he was 68 years old. In late 2020, the Russian Health Ministry approved a program to vaccinate people his age with the Sputnik V vaccine, but the president has not yet participated in it.
In the West, confidence in Sputnik V was undermined by Russia’s decision to approve the vaccine as soon as possible, until its developers released scientific data and conducted only limited tests.
Western officials, including former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, described the move as premature and publicly questioned Sputnik’s security.
An article appeared in the medical journal The Lancet in early February indicating that the effectiveness of the Sputnik vaccine in protecting against COVID-19 was 91.6 percent.
